With DAB, the Programme Associated Data is contained in the audio stream. This includes the text that is displayed alongside the station (at a negligible bitrate) and the slideshow data (this can be quite big depending on how it’s configured).
You might find the bitrate used for the audio portion might only have marginally increased if the bitrate of the PAD has been increased as well.
If I’m not mistaken, DAB Player shows the true audio rate. It’s often lower than you’d hope for higher bitrate stations.
Collapsed media startup Disrupt Radio racked up debts of more than $400k in unpaid rent and services, including $85k to presenter Libbi Gorr, according to court documents lodged as part of its winding up.
The network kicked off in June 2023 with big name talent and supporters, including Bob Geldof, who co-presented with Gorr for a week.
Court documents show that within 18 months, Disrupt was no longer paying its bills for rent and services with Sports Entertainment Network (SEN), which hosted Disrupt’s studios and provided access to its digital radio (DAB+) licenses.
Gorr’s company was named as a creditor along with SEN in the application for winding up, which was scheduled for the Victorian Supreme Court in February.
The winding up application was dismissed, however, possibly because the creditors agreed to a private settlement.
Via word of mouth I heard that the Capital Radio Network has also launched Forever Classic 70s which should be seen in Perth’s GfK Survey 2 results at the end of April. I’d already stumbled on the 60s version in the ACT (and loved it) and it was a friend not connected to radio who alerted me to the 70s station launch when she had found it on her daily commute.
The point of this article however, besides rediscovering the joy of a radio station playing something different, is that Forever Classic 60s and 70s is also providing local news bulletins.
Apparently NovaNation is disappearing from DAB in Brisbane on Sun April 27, I’m not sure what’s replacing it, possibly Nova Throwbacks or Nova Country?
Interesting that ARN haven’t rebranded Chemist Warehouse Remix following their KIIS Network rebrand. I always thought “Remix” was in reference to the former ARN Mix Network.
It’s a shame fans of EDM in Brisbane won’t have two stations to choose from on DAB+ come this weekend. I’ll freely admit the whole reason why I bought my first digital radio back in 2009 was so I could listen to Novanation MkI.
But I don’t think this is in any way a reflection of the current state of EDM’s popularity (say, as compared to country). If anything, this is more a comment on the type of old Karens who listen to DAB+. Middle-aged soccer moms and daggy old digsies who crank up the Coles Radio and Smooth FM (Gonna take some time to do the things we never had, ooh-hoo).
Us cool, hip EDM devotees deserted DAB+ a decade ago.
Extremely minor Melbourne change, RSN have replaced the “TAB Live”, which was just elevator music most of the time, with “RSN dotcom” - I assume podcasts on a loop?
