Did They Really Just Play That?

well, there was a Eurovision appearance, didn’t even make the top 10 in the final though, couldn’t quite emulate Katrina & The Waves

I heard AC/DC classic Thunderstruck on Fox’s Fifi Fev and Nick this morning. This song is usually played on Triple M.

Wa Wa Nee - Stimulation (1986) heard on community radio station 3CR in Melbourne in glorious mono! Their live stream and DAB+ feed is in mono.

(Gavin is more known for his jazz, blues and folk).

I was very young when this song was released. Didn’t understand it then, seems to try to achieve so much in one song.

Song discussions online don’t shed much light either. What’s it about?

Deep Purple’s Black Night just chosen by Luke Bona on Triple M as a caller suggested that may be the quickie.

Immediately following, Deep Purple’s Highway Star, double shot because I can said Luke.

Seems to be a lack of decent callers, less going to air this morning, so more music.

Hello there, first time poster, long time radio listener, earlier this morning at 5:50 AM, Triple M Sydney played The Look by Roxette. You would mostly hear a lot of Roxette’s discography on 2Day FM or most usually Triple M Regional (I listen to Triple M 102.9 Newcastle).

I’ve never heard them play Roxette before, they don’t sound totally out of place on Triple M metros as most of their music is pretty punchy and “rocky” enough.

Just heard this on 2DayFM:

Why do you say that?

It’s a 2002 song, seems like it would fit the 2Day 30 something female skewed mould to me…

It’s a crap cover. You can’t take a well-known emotional song and put a dance beat under it.

There have been other 80s classics (note) that have been poorly remade, that were hits in the 90s/00s but still get played on the radio today… some people obviously still like the remade ones (not me though).

Note
Total Eclipse Of The Heart - Bonnie Tyler / Nicki French
Break My Stride - Matthew Wilder / Unique II
? - probably others as well

Potentially Wild Wild West - Will Smith and Miami - Will Smith (Although that is 1979).

I know people who use the term “Frenched” for when they wreck a great song with a crap cover version

i.e. what Nicki French did to Total Eclipse

Off topic but I think there are a few examples of covers that were better than the originals:
Always Something There To Remind Me - Naked Eyes version
You Keep Me Hanging On - Kim Wilde
and dare I say it, the FYC version of Suspicious Minds

Actually maybe it’s an 80s thing? The covers that were done in the 80s often seemed better than the originals.

Agree… I preferred these 80s covers to the 60s/70s originals

Venus - Bananarama
Locomotion - Kylie Minogue (the Aussie version, not the SAW UK one).
Funky Town - Pseudo Echo

A couple from the 90s that are good:

‘I Think I Love You’- Voice Of The Beehive. Superior to the original Partridge Family theme.

‘Shivers’- Screaming Jets. Cover of Nick Cave/Boys Next Door. The original has grown on me but the Jets cover is still pretty good and it’s the one I grew up with. The other Jets covers are decent too, ‘Eve Of Destruction’ and especially ‘Cunnamulla Feller’.

‘There She Goes’- Sixpence None The Richer. About equal with The La’s original in my estimation.

Oh yes those too. Especially Venus.

Never knew “Shivers” was a cover! Will have to have a listen to the Nick Cave version then.
