Vienna / Ultravox right now on Smooth Relax. Not that I’m complaining it’s a great song but was a bit out of the ordinary for Relax.
I’m finding Smooth Relax an awesome listen lately. Great background for working at home and it’s the type of station you can leave on all day. They also played Chariots of Fire yesterday.
“Gangnam Style” was played on B-Rock FM just over an hour ago. The strange song selections don’t end there, take a look at what was played just an hour before that:
Nirvana’s “You Know You’re Right” to “Call Me Maybe” by Carly-Rae Jepson. What a jarring change!
BBC Radio 2 just played Rainbow Connection by Kermit the frog.
Ok it was in the early hours of the morning over there and they were taking requests from listeners with the theme of ‘optimism’.
But is there any other high rating station in the world who would play a current hit by Dua Lipa, then Lady Gaga, then an 80s hit by Bangles, and then Kermit ?
And then straight to the rather serious 1AM BBC News.
They’re on fire tonight. Just played Everything Counts / Depeche Mode and a bit later Sound and Vision / David Bowie. Probably belongs in the Great Songs thread…
I’m curious to know if the stations were manned by a presenter around the time you heard the songs that made you go “did they just play that” or just playing from Mr robo DJ?
If you’re referring to the BBC Radio 2 show in the early hours of the morning it was 100% live. And I know that for sure because the host ‘OJ’ gave me a shout out (along with a few others) after I emailed him about the Kermit song. In fact he has quite a following in Australia and NZ and often gives a shout out to them when they email with song suggestions or just generally.
I was actually stoked to get a shout out on a radio station live in the UK, and it was literally only 10 minutes after sending him the email. He even made a joke about ‘Brian from Brisbane’. Seems like a nice chap.
Impressive. Also a bit depressing to think how impossible it would be to get any Australian radio station to respond on a midnight to dawn shift - they wouldn’t have a live announcer for a start.
Kids in the Kitchen is Australian Rock music, very popular in the 80s. Stations such as EON FM, FM 104, and Sydney’s original Triple M used to play them. Ignored these days, except on the Rebel which excels itself on playing “haven’t heard that for a while” rock music.
Yep I agree, part of the broad church of rock music. But it is true that Rebel mostly plays harder rock; soft rock acts are primarily heard on Breeze. I lean mainly towards the softer pop rock these days.
