Did They Really Just Play That?

Love that song! A clever parody, even if a bit obvious and just a bit sexist. Couldn’t do that these days of course.

I noticed on 2ue , I heard "Do you remember the time? by Michael Jackson and then Highway to hell by ACDC tracks that would be rare to hear on a Sydney AM station for many years. Maybe when Doug Mulray was in 2sm for a short stint in the mid 90s that might of been the last time we heard those types of tracks. Sydney had 2ch only as a music station for many years and it would of been super rare to hear those tracks. Even on 2uw and 2ws before they converted to FM those tracks would of been pretty rare to hear. 2uw had an oldies format in the early 90s , 2ws were hits and memories, might of played ACDC but I think it was more of a thing in the 00s as a FM station.

Overall it is good 2ue play more upbeat tracks, but still it’s the same tired oldies that would be so called 2ws FM tracks.

I remember him on drive on 2WS FM, but not 2SM?

Uncle Doug was on 2SM in 1997 hosting drive.

Correct @Mechsta

“After a year, Doug had taken the ratings from 2.1 to the high 7s on 2SM, and we went to 2WS. Alas, what had been free-form radio, making it up as we went along, was jammed into a highly regulated corporate environment with a playlist that came from Los Angeles, and it just didn’t work, though the show was significant for pioneering the idea that radio could be multi-platformed, on the internet.”

That year I think 2SM music was pretty good I wonder if @Frankster has any sound checks to confirm whether my memory is correct on the music format (it was post country music format ?) . It is a shame he didn’t stay at 2SM. 2WS was too sensitive in sticking to a more safe format, Doug was too free spirited for 2WS.

According to Lava, i98fm played these during the early hours of yesterday morning:

  • “Last Time Last” - Brad Cox (2023)
  • “Elephant” - Tame Impala (2012)
  • “Cigarettes Will Kill You” - Ben Lee (1999)

“Last Time Last”; now that’s a super obscure song! Brad Cox is an Australian country-music singer (I hadn’t heard of him until now, lol), but what makes the song choice so strange is the fact it has never even charted on the ARIA Charts (so it was never a hit). It’s a song that’s honestly more suited to Kix Country or Triple J, not a commercial Top-40 station like i98fm!

Tame Impala’s more recent hits receive a decent amount of airplay (e.g “Dracula”), but i’m amazed that they played “Elephant”! That’s a song even Triple M doesn’t touch. :stuck_out_tongue: It’s one of their early psychedelic rock hits; great song too!

I’ve heard “Cigarettes Will Kill You” on Triple J in recent times, however it’s a bizarre choice for i98fm.

At 11:05 AM this morning on Triple M Newcastle 102.9, I heard a special “Newcastle” version of AC/DC’s “TNT” that replaces the “TNT” hook in the main chorus with the “NEW-CAS-TLE” chant heard at the Newcastle Knights games. It was to promote the Knights being in this year’s NRL Grand Final this coming Sunday, a bit weird but a very nice touch from Triple M Newcastle indeed!

Ok full disclosure, I really like this song! I generally can’t stand Christmas songs but this is one of my favourites, along with Fairytale Of New York.

Christmas Lights / Coldplay - played just now on the Breeze. But it’s only October!

“She Does” by Casey Barnes on Triple M Newcastle 102.9, a song released this year during “Awesome 80s Friday” (Regional MMMs and Brisbane and Adelaide still does this).

Slightly off-topic, but during the Nine News Sydney report on the Newcastle Knights’ homecoming I could hear “Sweet but Psycho” by Ava Max playing in the background (while the players were at McDonald Jones Stadium thanking their fans for their support).
