Television royalty sent packing

Rebecca Gibney departs Dancing With The Stars in audience-voted twist

Tonight on Dancing With The Stars on Seven and 7plus, the first batch of celebrities returned to the floor for a royal celebration, with acting royalty Rebecca Gibney exiting the competition.

In a special episode celebrating the kings and queens of song and dance, our celebrities performed to some of the most iconic singers in the world as they tried to avoid elimination.

Kicking off the show, Rebecca bought the drama and passion with her paso doble to Whitney Houston’s Queen of the Night, earning 28 points. Mark Wilson was pleasantly surprised by Rebecca’s improvement but said she lacked paso body shapes.

Radio host Brittany Hockley delivered a truly terrific tango to Kylie’s Padam Padam, scoring herself 33 points. Mark Wilson was impressed with how quickly Brittany has taken to dancing, giving her his royal wand of approval.

Judge Sharna Burgess was floored by boxing icon Harry Garside’s hard work and dedication to dancing, as he performed a sensual rumba to John Touch of Paradise. Receiving 25 points, Harry failed to impress Craig Revel Horwood, who found his dance disconnected.

7NEWS presenter Michael Usher took to the floor with a graceful Viennese waltz, to Adele’s One and Only. Earning a solid score of 29, Craig said Michael brought grace and class to the dance.

Helen Richey got her flirt on with AFL legend Trent Cotchin, who embodied Elvis for a rocking Jive. Donning his own Blue Suede Shoes, Trent topped the leaderboard as all four judges raved about his performance, with Craig admitting “I loved it”.

After the studio audience votes were combined with the judges scores, Harry Garside was lifted from the bottom of the leaderboard, and we said goodbye to Rebecca Gibney. Rebecca thanked her dance partner Ian, while adding: “The amount of work that goes into this show, costumes are amazing the make up is amazing. Everyone from the judges, the production crew and everyone behind the scenes – it’s mindboggling how extraordinary everyone is and I’m going to miss it.”

Final leaderboard for the night:

  • Trent Cotchin and Jess Raffa: 35
  • Brittany Hockley and Craig Monley: 33
  • Michael Usher and Natalie Lowe: 29
  • Rebecca Gibney and Ian Waite: 28
  • Harry Garside and Siobhan Power: 25

Dancing With The Stars continues next Sunday, the second group of celebrities – including as Home and Away star Kyle Shilling, influencer Mia Fevola, TV comic Shaun Micallef, radio host Osher Günsberg, and comedian Felicity Ward hit return to the dancefloor for second half of the kings and queens of song and dance celebration.

So there was no “audience vote twist” - it was just the outcome of the regular format.

Quite a few people online have discussed whether Brittany Hockley has had prior dancing experience. She said she hasn’t but it seems some of the judges and Sonia thought otherwise, asking her straight out whether she’s had dancing or gymnastic experience.

Harry Garside and Kyle Shilling have both talked about their prior dancing experience so if this is the case with Brittany I don’t see the harm in talking about it. There have been contestants in the past who denied previous dancing experience and were caught out.

Scandalous.

There is no way in hell Rebecca Gibney would have gone this early on the previous live version of the show with a public vote.

The studio audience vote in unfair. How many people are there? 50? Do family and friends of the stars vote too? Sometimes we see the other stars in the audience too. Do they vote too?

In this pre-recorded series, just leave the voting for the judges. Otherwise, bring back the live (or near live) editions so the actual public can vote.

Tango tension

Osher Günsberg exits Dancing With The Stars after fiery on-air clash

Tonight on Dancing With The Stars on Seven and 7plus, the second group of celebrities returned to the floor for a right royal time, with TV host Osher Günsberg exiting the competition and Home and Away hunk Kyle Shilling topping the leaderboard with a perfect score.

The celebrities performed to music by some of the most iconic singers in the kings and queens of song and dance special.

Shaun Micallef opens the show with an explosive Paso Doble to Queen’s We Will Rock You, while also performing a Shakespeare soliloquy. Ever impressed, Mark Wilson loved Shaun’s strong character and encouraged more drive and dynamics throughout his dancing. Shaun received a score of 23.

Osher Günsberg’s Tango to Fashion by David Bowie failed to set the judges’ world alight, with Craig Revel Horwood calling his performance a “right royal mess”. A heated exchanged between Osher and Craig ensued, as Osher encouraged Craig to get up and try performing in front of everybody. After receiving the lowly score of two from Craig, Osher collected a total of 15 points.

Model and brand influencer Mia Fevola stunned with a sensual rumba to Madonna’s Crazy For You. Helen commented on how beautiful it was to watch Mia and Gustavo dance together, before Mia received a score of 28.

Felicity Ward showed her softer side in her Foxtrot to Birds Of A Feather by Billie Eilish. Sharna Burgess called her performance “gorgeous and beautiful”, before Felicity was awarded 33 points.

Home and Away actor Kyle Shilling received a perfect score for his electrifying jive to Elton John’s I’m Still Standing. After completing an impressive triple cartwheel flip in his routine with his partner Lily Cornish, Kyle received rave reviews from the judges including Craig, who exclaimed Kyle performed “absolutely brilliantly”.

After the studio audience’s votes were combined with the judges’ scores, Osher was voted out of the competition. Osher thanked his dance partner Sriani: “Sriani’s an extraordinary teacher, she’s such an incredible human being to have the patience to deal with me and my small kind of tincy fly kind of brain. Thanks for having me. It’s been great.”

Final leaderboard for the night:

  • Kyle Shilling and Lily Cornish: 40
  • Felicity Ward and Aric Yegudkin: 33
  • Mia Fevola and Gustavo Viglio: 28

Semi-Finals showdown

Olympian Harry Garside bows out of Dancing With The Stars

Tonight on Seven and 7plus, the remaining four celebrities from the first group gave it their all in the Dancing With The Stars Semi-Finals, with Olympic boxer Harry Garside saying goodbye to the dancefloor.

With their freestyle performances in sight, the stakes were higher than ever as each couple hit the floor determined to secure their place in the Grand Finale.

Harry opened the show with a steamy Mad Max inspired Tango. While the judges agreed the style wasn’t his’s strongest, they praised his effort and commitment to the performance before scoring him 20 points.

AFL star Trent Cotchin continued to impress with a sassy Cha Cha. The judging panel scored Trent 34 points and were unanimous in their praise, as Mark Wilson declared the routine “Grand Finale worthy”.

Brittany Hockley slowed things down with a graceful waltz, inspired by her long-distance romance. The emotional routine, which earned 35 points, struck a chord with the judges, with Sharna Burgess telling Brittany she’s truly “turned into a dancer”.

Closing the night, Michael Usher and Natalie Lowe tackled a high-octane jive to Tina Turner’s Proud Mary. While the judges appreciated the performance, they felt the technique slipped, with Craig remarking it was “beyond his capabilities”. Michael scored 19 for his performance.

Before the results were announced, fans were treated to a thrilling performance by superstar dancer and judge Sharna Burgess.

With the audience vote combined with judges’ scores, it was Harry Garside and partner Siobhan Power who were sent home. Reflecting on his journey, Harry said: “it’s been so much fun it’s such an amazing process. To share this with Siobhan, and to learn how to dance from her, like how cool is that? So fingers crossed it helps my boxing, I’m sure it will.”

Final leaderboard for the night:

  • Brittany Hockley and Craig Monley: 35
  • Trent Cotchin and Jess Raffa: 34
  • Harry Garside and Siobhan Power: 20
  • Michael Usher and Natalie Lowe: 19
