Seven Brisbane 6pm news
Nine Queensland
Nine Live Queensland 4.30 Headlines:
“Look, there is a test you can get at the doctors to check if there’s a cyclone”
Good Jesus that opener. How sensationalist and fearmongering can you get.
Can you vaccinate against a cyclone?
I will be interested to see how many times we see a reporter tomorrow outside being buffeted by wind and/or rain (despite instructions from authorities to stay inside) and how many times a studio anchor tells someone after a cross to “stay safe”.
Breaking: ABC News is reporting that BOM cannot rule out Debbie potentially being a category five storm by the time it makes landfall tomorrow morning.
edit: according to ABC radio, BOM upgraded the storm to cat 4 much earlier than anticipated.
That has been the Nine Queensland approach to news for a while.
Breaking news alert during MKR in Perth advising Kochie & Sam in the storm zone tomorrow morning.
Matt White joining Sarah Harris with coverage from 6am EDST for Studio 10.
Eyewitness News tonight
ABC Radio QLD tonight using 1300 801 222 phone number so overnight at least it sounds as though it is broadcast from Cairns
A few combined emergency broadcasts on the QLD SCA stations. Just a basic formula; few songs, emergency tone w/ announcer reading out the latest BOM warnings, ads.
They’re giving this little ID a run on MMM Mackay currently: “Cyclones are scary, but it’s okay, we’re here with you. This is an emergency joint broadcast on Hit and Triple M”
They were using the 612 number before 11pm, when I believe the program was being hosted from Brisbane. Shortly before 11pm it was mentioned that a new presenter would be taking over. Programming must be coming from Cairns until the Local Radio breakfast programs take over at dawn.
From what I can hear it is only the Mackay/Whitsundays stations doing this. I don’t think 4TO and Hit Townsville have broadcast any warnings.
This level of national coverage seems almost unprecedented!
Would be interested if there’s a copy of that…
