For the first time since 2012, the Festival State’s cricket team has tasted glory in a national competition, winning Saturday night’s domestic One-Day Cup final by 64 runs against Victoria.
Queensland Fire suffered a batting collapse of 8/59 to be bowled out for 194.
India’s win means Sunday’s Champions Trophy final will be held in Dubai.
Twin centuries by Rachin Ravindra and Kane Williamson have helped New Zealand to defeat South Africa by 50 runs in the Champions Trophy semi final last night. NZ will again face India, this time for the title, in Dubai on Sunday.
Jimmy Bartel and Matthew Richardson had a phone chat with Brad O’Dell on 3AW’s Wide World of Sports this evening. Audio should be available later tonight.
India had a huge advantage as they were playing at the one venue (Dubai) for the duration of the tournament. I know there was a good reason for this…but would the concession have been made for any other team?
It must be frustrating to be a Kiwi supporter. So often they reach the semi finals and finals and bomb out.
I agree @dxnerd, I would made Pakistan/ India comp. And when India play Pakistan it be in the UAE or even Sri Lanka I am not sure how easy it is to cross the border between India and Pakistan.
It was frustrating having to travel back and forth. And yes you’re right that it was a massive advantage to the Indians being in Dubai the whole time (they knew that wicket very well).
But us Black Caps supporters have very low expectations. If we were to blame anyone it would be Mitchell (for blocking the ball for a total of more than six overs). I think we knew we didn’t stand a chance when Henry was ruled out, but you’re right, we always do tend to bomb out.
In the words of the great Scotty Styris. ‘We’re just happy to have made it as far as we have’.
The Sheffield Shield is very close this year. South Australia have made the final and will host but the challenger position is wide open. WA and NSW were the front runners but a somewhat stodgy draw has dampened their chances. Now Queensland are in second position with one round of matches to play. I think only Tassie is out of contention completely, whilst VIC still has a slim chance.
The one-off test, celebrating 150 years of test cricket, will be held from March 11 to 15.
I’ve been watching every game of the WPL and quite honestly it has been one of the best cricket competitions I have ever watched. Top quality players, competitive games. top-knotch umpiring and great coverage. It is head and shoulders the best Women’s cricket in the world. We need the same here. Same with the men’s game.
When Parky asked Warnie what is greatest achievement was in his cricket career he replied with ‘winning the IPL with the Rajasthan Royals’. The IPL. Nothing beats it.
Sorry- it’s test cricket hands down for me. An acquired taste to be sure but nothing beats the ebbs and flows of the long form. Unfortunately many test matches are one sided, but when it’s competitive there’s nothing better in sport.
Most T20 matches are formulaic: six hitting, high scoring with the chasing side usually winning. It’s the six hitting that attracts the more casual fan. No doubt that T20 is the most lucrative form of the game though, and money talks. As long as the largesse from the leagues somewhat subsidise tests then I’m happy.
I grew up on Test Cricket. My first dose of it was in 1979 when my Grandad took me to see the Windies v Aotearoa at Lancaster Park. And sure it was great. We went all five days. As a member of the Gabba I go to every test every year. And test cricket is good. But if I’m honest I haven’t witnessed too many close tests. It’s rare for tests to be truly competitive.
Sure we can have test cricket. But if test cricket was the be-all and end-all we would never have had the world series in the 70s and the complete and absolute revolution of the game. Cricket would just be an obscure game of irrelevant draws shown on the ABC.
True cricket fans since the 70s have been able to embrace test cricket as well as the shorter forms of the game.
You claim to be a fan of test cricket yet not once during the test summer did you ever comment on any of the AUS v IND tests here on this forum.
The future of cricket in this country is us fans embracing what the players already have.
I didn’t realise posting about cricket on a media forum was the litmus test for a ‘true fan’.
As an aside, the ICC need to figure out what is going on and fast when it comes to the international game v franchise game. There is too much in the calendar - which dilutes the importance of all of it.
Too busy watching it ![]()
MacGill’s case is expected to return to court in May for sentence proceedings.
This month’s Sheffield Shield final will be held at Karen Rolton Oval in Adelaide, after a move to play the game at Adelaide Oval was blocked by the AFL.
