Was referring to the country’s official and legal name is New Zealand
Oops! Yes sorry.
I think I also used the term ‘Kiwi’ in other posts as well. From now on I will only use official terms.
We all know what he meant mate.
And I’m thinking this will probably be it moving forward. Depending on how many runs she makes, she’ll probably say ‘Beth’s doing really well behind the stumps’ and continue as a specialist batter for the Ashes.
Day 1 of the third test was washed out - only 13.2 overs were possible - play will start a half hour earlier at 9:50am AEST (10:50am AEDT) - aiming for another 98 overs to be bowled.
Australia 0-28 at the end of the day’s play.
I wonder if this will shut those wanting shorter tests up.
I doubt it, if anything, it will just question the wisdom of Cricket Australia in scheduling summer tests in Brisbane (and Sydney) when our summers are getting hotter and wetter.
Do you know what though a winter test in Brisbane, Sydney and Darwin would be pretty epic. Although hard to schedule with AFL.
I agree, that’s just what I was thinking… Agree about scheduling, but it’s only 1 weekend, Lions and Swans just play away that weekend, and they could use a drop in pitch at the Gabba/SCG.
That way, having 3 x autumn/winter/spring Tests in BNE, SYD, DRW (or maybe CNS) would open up the whole mid December period onwards for BBL, so that all Australian players could then play in that. It’d be great to see Starc bowling to Labuschange for instance.
So instead of a 5 test series every 4 years for Ashes/India, have them as 2 x 3 Test series every 2 years.
I’d like to see them stay at 5 days - but I do wonder what the current distribution of finalised tests is (ie what day they ended).
Winter cricket at the Gabba is pretty special.
I remember going to see Australia v Pakistan for an ODI many years ago in winter. Not a huge crowd from what I remember and not sure what the Lions did that weekend.
We currently don’t have drop-ins at either venue. But I certainly know that the Lions would prefer one.
I was just thinking that today- summer cricket should now be played in the southern capitals+ Perth. So a five test series could go Perth, Adelaide, Canberra, Melbourne and Hobart ![]()
(I’d play the NY test in Hobart; Canberra is too hot in January and all the public servants have gone to Batemans Bay). Seriously, a test match in Hobart just after the yacht race would probably work; Tassie comes alive in midsummer when everywhere else is hiding from the heat and/or rain.
Relegate Sydney and Brisbane to limited over matches only in the warm season.
Of course, this will never happen and the public hasn’t got much appetite for cricket in the middle of the footy season, and that’s before you get to the logistical issues mentioned. AFL- despite its origins as winter training for the great summer game- is now very much king.
Guess who picked a great day to go to the cricket ![]()
At least we get our money back. Had they bowled 10 more balls, we would not have.
Hopefully you might be able to get any spare tickets for day 4 or maybe 5 if they need to use these day’s due to the rain delays
Very unlucky, the BOM got it spectacularly wrong it seems- they didn’t expect 70 mm and rain all day in Brisbane. Meanwhile the Northern Rivers barely got anything. That’s been a pattern lately- SEQ has found itself right in the firing line for the rain events. The sea surface temps are already 26C or so off Brisbane so that’s likely to produce more heavy showers for the duration of the match, as winds remain easterly. Dewpoint was around 23C with the rain, yuck.
Yeah we knew there’d be showers, but even looking at the radar an hour or so before, it looked like it might just be a passing shower or two throughout the day. The deluge that hit was unbelievable.
Another argument for mine that, if they are going to persist with Brisbane tests in Nov/Dec, they should at least start them earlier in the day. There’s no reason you couldn’t bowl the first ball at 0930 AEST here - the sun’s already been up for five hours at that point, and you’d give yourself more chance of getting play in before afternoon showers/storms. We sat there yesterday watching the warm up in dry for over an hour before the first ball, knowing rain was coming throughout the day, when we could have been playing.
It’s a radical idea… but yep, could work. The broadcasters would probably prefer it too. Rain delays in the past haven’t tended to bother me cos I normally end up at the German Club or the Aussie Nash… but yeah a 9.30 start to play? It does sound extremely early, but I don’t see why not.
Brisbane has a tendency in all aspects of life to start things a bit earlier, especially in summer, most likely to compensate for our lack of daylight saving here. I reckon the cricket could do the same.
The first ball on Boxing Day in Melbourne is usually bowled at 1030 AEDT, which is 0930 AEST, so in reality it kind of aligns and would still work for TV audiences along the east coast. It also gives you a bit more time at the end of the day before dark in case you do lose a few overs during the day and need to play later.
They could start at 8am if they really wanted to, light wouldn’t be an issue at that time of day.
