Melbourne Renegades spinner Cameron Boyce took a double hat-trick (4 wickets in 4 balls) in the BBL match against Sydney Thunder at the MCG this afternoon. Boyce took the wicket of Alex Hales with the last ball of the 7th over of the innings, before dismissing Jason Sangha, Alex Ross and Daniel Sams with the first three balls of the 9th over. Boyce finished with match figures of 5/21.

It is the first double hat trick in BBL history and the 10th in Twenty20 cricket history.

UPDATE: however, the Renegades still lost the match by one run. They lost four wickets for nine runs in the last nine balls of the run chase, including three in the final over.

Last night Renegades lost to Hobart at Marvel Stadium in a similar position.

Thunder just beat the Renegades by 1 run, meaning the Melbourne based franchise has finished last for the 3rd year in a row.

I see some Test players have returned to BBL sides, such as Labuschange, Khawaja and Lyon.

Given the NZ series isn’t going ahead, I wonder if the likes of Smith, Starc and Warner might now link up with franchises for the BBL finals starting on Friday?

Would love to see Starc bowling to Warner etc.

I really hope not. All the hard work by the players who got the teams to finals and now Australian players walk in and might take a medal away from them

True, but it’s a rare opportunity for the AUS players to all technically be available for BBL finals.

I’m sure they could arrange for ALL players who were in the winning franchise at some point during the season to get a medal, also because each team have had a number of players unavailable at some point due to COVID.

What a remarkable night of cricket at the MCG. After the Renegades capitulated in their run chase against the Thunder, Melbourne Stars delivered the best batting performance of the season with 2/273, the highest team score in BBL history and the highest score in franchise cricket, breaking the previous record score of 5/232 (Thunder v Sixers at Adelaide Oval on January 22 last year). 273 is also the third highest score in the first class T20 format - Afghanistan made 3/278 against Ireland in February 2019 and Czech Republic scored 4/278 against Turkey in Romania six months later.

Captain Glenn Maxwell became the first player in BBL history to reach 150, smashing 154 not out from 64 balls.

It was incredible batting from Maxwell and Stoinis.

Maxwell also hit the 2nd fastest century in BBL history (in 41 balls) on his way to 154 not out.

It was also the 3rd highest total in ANY first class T20 competition ever, only 5 runs short of the highest totals of 278 (scored by both Afghanistan and Czech Republic).

The Stars also smashed the previous BBL highest score of 232 by 41 runs.

And all the more remarkable that the Stars have missed the finals.

Hobart Hurricanes were never in the contest after the Stars posted that record score, losing by 106 runs. Hurricanes finished their season in fifth spot on 27 points, one point more than Stars.

Hurricanes rested a number of key players and paid the price. As a small consolation, their wicketkeeper Ben McDermott was voted MVP of BBL11 on the 3-2-1 voting system.

No surprise that Glenn Maxwell was named player of the match for his superb innings of 154 not out.

Did he have more 3s than Maxi?

International Cricket Council announced the teams of the year tonight Australian time. There was only one Australian in the men’s test team of the year (Marnus Labuschagne), two in T20 team of the year (Mitchell Marsh and Josh Hazlewood), and none in the ODI team of the year.

Azam an interesting choice for captain in this context given he speaks very little English, even though this team doesn’t exist in reality.

What does that have to do with anything?

If it was an actual team, the captain as leader would need to be able to communicate with his players.

…but it’s not a real team, as you said yourself.

The Sydney Sixers have booked themselves in the BBL11 Final after beating the Strikers by 4 wickets with zero balls to spare. Hayden Kerr scored an unbeaten 98 off 58 balls.
This will be the fifth time that scorchers and the Sixers play in a bbl final. Who would win the bbl final on Friday?

  • Scorchers
  • Sixers

Remarkable win by the two-time defending champions given Josh Philippe tested positive to COVID this morning (and would miss tonight’s game as well as Friday’s final), Daniel Hughes yet to recover from his ankle injury, while Jordan Silk and Stephen O’Keefe both suffered leg injuries while fielding during Strikers’ innings.

I’m not inclined to watch it. It’s not healthy for the BBL for the same 2 teams to be dominating the competition.

Interesting to see no national anthems at the Ashes Test this morning.
