About time the Thunder had a season where the weather favoured us! We beat the Renegades by 7 runs on DLS. #Thundernation

The Australian Medical Association released a statement this afternoon, demanding next weekā€™s SCG test be held without spectators.

This came after comments by NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian that health authorities would conduct a ā€œwalkthroughā€ of the ground with NSW Police and the SCG Trust on arrangements for the match. She said:

The New South Wales Government strategy is to keep jobs, to keep community morale and wellbeing, whilst making sure weā€™re COVID-safe.

WA Health Minister Roger Cook said this afternoon that tomorrowā€™s BBL game between the Scorchers and the Renegades could go ahead, similar to arrangements for the AFL. The Renegades would be treated as a ā€œdirty teamā€ and would travel directly between the hotel and Optus Stadium and would not interact with the public.

Just wondering, do you think cricket would benefit from following a similar change to the aleague with the BBL becoming independent from Cricket Australia or even following something similar to Netball Australia where there is a Super Netball committee that runs super netball

Why?

Would be very tricky given the international game runs at the same time.

It seems to be a trend in sports governance, but Iā€™m not sold that its the right approach for every sport. Iā€™m not sure that looking at the A-League as a reason why is really the right one

CA need to do a better job of ensuring the BBLā€™s success on the basis of not having stars

Iā€™m thinking that way it might free it up a bit or allow New Zealand to be part of it too? Might then allow the BBL to realign itself with what the purpose of the competition is?

NSW deputy premier John Barilaro said this morning that it was up to Queensland health authorities to set up quarantine rules for the players for the Brisbane test.

I dont see why you couldnt do that under the current structure especially given the desire to make something more of the ā€œdomesticā€ T20 on an international level (like the ill-fated Champions League) has evaporated

I wonder whether finishing the series after 3 tests is on the cards too

From a commercial sense and agreements, it makes it very difficult under the current arrangement

Going independent isnā€™t going to fix that, at least initially. CA need to try and diversify their commercial interests so they can be less beholden to their media contracts in future deals (and not have to chase unicorn deals) - one of the biggest reasons why the BBL is dropping fans is the length of the season, but this appears to be one of the things that TV wants.

The reality is, as much as Seven wont accept it, that unless the ICC agrees to a break in International games - the likelihood of getting the international stars to play in the BBL diminishes every year.

Itā€™s also the fact its a fox excliusive now, along with the ODI matches. these are the games that should be on FTA, the Wham Bam Whallop of ODI got me into cricket as a kid and now iā€™m more of a purist - i am not a big fan of ODI or T20, but i love a test match.

they need the show to get the kids in and get them hooked

A bit off topic, I really think the test cricket grounds NZ are awesome just watching some of the test match in NZ over in Hagley oval Christchurch. Really is a nice ground. I wish Australia would go over more often to play a test match series.

Watch the shit hit the fan. :stuck_out_tongue:

And whatā€™s the bet theyā€™ll rub the wrong people in the wrong way? I can see Sydney hosting the next two tests just to spite AP. Not that we should in the current circumstances, but I can see it happening.

Not if the BCCI have anything to do with it. A contract is a contract.

Most top leagues in football are run independently of the governing body with minimal oversight. Iā€™d say FIFA told Football Australia they have to follow suit eventually. But you are right about the BBL not being suitable to be run independently. Not while the state bodies still own the franchises in any case. And definitely whilst the BBL still needs stars to help boost bums on seats.

The Stars and the Renegades were much better when they were ran independently now it is a complete mess for both teams that CV is running them.

I think both of them have always been run by Cricket Victoria - just having a figurehead president. All franchises are owned by the state bodies, always have been. Youā€™d know if they were independently owned.
