Well we have a Shane Watson review moment, just look for the 2nd innings dismissal of Aidan Markram at the South Africa vs England test at Centurion.

For the record the SuperSport coverage has commentators from the ground, yet SABC’s coverage (available to South Africa only from what I’m assuming) due to presumably budget cuts (SABC are in bigger financial strife than any other public broadcaster that I know of) their calls as well as the local radio call are being studio fed (Talksport UK has the rights, think they’re at the ground).

India is touring in all formats later in the NZ summer so that makes up for it from a financial standpoint, plus they started the international season earlier than ever.

Several members of England cricket team which won this year’s ICC World Cup have been honoured in the 2020 New Year’s Honours list. One-day captain Eoin Morgan has been given a CBE, while Ben Stokes and outgoing team coach Trevor Bayliss are made OBEs. Joe Root and Jos Buttler are made MBEs.
West Indies legends Clive Lloyd and Gordon Greenidge have also been honoured with Lloyd getting a knighthood.

More woes for New Zealand with their star bowler out of the SCG test.

Its hard to believe NZ are the second ranked test side at the moment

COngratulations Peter Siddle on a wonderful career. During the 1st ashes series in Nov 2010 in brisbane, peter siddle took a hat trick on his 26th birthday. Mark Taylor’s commentary ‘HE’s given him!’ Well done Siddle. You will be remembered as the first player to take a hat trick on his birthday.

There’s a lot of average test sides currently. India and Australia should be the top 2, but the next 5 are probably interchangeable.

Admittedly the way that the rankings are calculated is hot garbage, but the kiwis form coming into Australia was good, what’s gone wrong?

We battle against genuine pace bowlers who can also move the ball. We seem to be able to deal with one at a time only. Williamson (especially) and Nicholls are much better batsmen than they’ve shown on this tour but lacked patience at times.

We also selected a very poor red ball spin bowler.

NZ have made five changes. Williamson, Santner and Nicholls have been ruled out with a mystery virus, while Southee and Boult are injured (Boult has already flown home). Batsman Glenn Phillips, who flew in from NZ yesterday, makes his debut. Jeet Raval returns as he is the only spare batsman left in the team. Tom Latham will be the stand-in captain.

Australia have clinched a 3-0 clean sweep of its test series against New Zealand, thumping a depleted Kiwi side by 279 runs at the SCG at the end of day 4. The victory was set up by a double century by Marnus Labuschagne (player of the match and series) and Nathan Lyon, who grabbed five wickets in each of NZ innings.
There was some controversy when opener David Warner was penalised five runs by field umpire Aleem Dar for running on the pitch in the second innings.

My thoughts on Australia v NZ 3rd Test:

  • Marnus Labuschagne did exceptionally well and scored 215 runs. He scored his maiden double century.
  • David Warner also scored an unbeaten 111 off 159 balls.
  • Nathan Lyon took 10/138 during the SCG Test.
  • I feel that the Australian side have completed their most dominant Test summer this season with 2 wins over Pakistan, and 3 wins over NZ. The Australian side have a good bowling attack by Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon.
  • Australia sit 2nd in the World Test Championship Table (2019-2021).

The only consolation for NZ is that Ross Taylor became the country’s leading run-scorer today.

Marnus Labuschagne also currently ranks as the 4th best batsman in the world.

One of the most insipid summers of cricket I can remember, though in fairness the nation has bigger problems at the moment. The only real point of interest has been Labuschagne out Smithing Piggy. Our bowlers were always going to perform well.

Now to…India? It will be interesting to see if Australia can follow up their victory there in Feb-March 2019. India are currently even more dominant at home than Australia is, though.

Two hat-tricks in one day actually. Rashid Khan took three wickets in three balls across two overs during Strikers v Sixers clash in Adelaide this afternoon. Sixers still won the clash by two wickets.
