They will get the old crew back again Ponting, Gilchrist, Waugh, Fleming, Howie and the best of the rest.
If this happened, wonder how Foxtel would feel about working with 10, knowing they’d be losing their STV rights to them the next year (I’m assuming Paramount wouldn’t be allowed to stream that summer). Considering Foxtel produce the Tests too. Potential for sabotage? I’m kidding, but you get my point.
I’ll put money on the BBL changing fairly soonish - regardless of the TV deal, CA will have to do something to try and stem the loss of playing talent to competing tournaments.
This article has some details about the BBL possibly being shortened depending on who gets the rights:
Points from the article:
- CA is open to slash BBL by 20 games
- 10 and Paramount are open to the 61-game season, but other networks and players want it shortened
- A starting point for the broadcast rights is 61-games, but could be shortened to 40 games
- Senior players have long expressed for the game to be shortened
- The length of the season will depend on which broadcaster receives rights
40 games is better than 61. 61 is too long
I think it should be shortened regardless of who gets it. It should be 5 home & 5 away games like it was before it got expanded
Not sure if this has been mentioned, but Seven and Nine of course care about publicity and being ‘No. 1’ be it total people or key demos or both and ad revenue. And not disrupting their prized nightly news services and other staples and focussed on survey starts in Feb. 10 on the other hand, these days, don’t seem to care about any of that. So it’s obvious which networks want BBL shortened (i.e.) looking at the ratings vs 10 who perhaps aren’t as concerned in the raw ratings performances.
No real advantage for the average viewer. They still have to pay for a subscription service, in many cases ANOTHER subscription service if they already have Foxtel, to watch all cricket.
Is anyone else expecting some left field bid to come and fly past on the last second? Optus Sport and SBS?
With what money?
I’m just thinking like last time, Seven came out of no where to claim FTA rights
An interesting read in the context of rights being up for renewal, specifically how the Big Bash League can be revived.
With the poor showing for the first game of the BBL perhaps Cricket Australia should jump at the offer from 10 before it is withdrawn.
If Seven and Fox do not want BBL, maybe they could on-sell it to Ten?
I’m not sure 10 would want it after last nights numbers.
Add in the Fox numbers and while they’re still low, Ten would definitely take them at that point.
There’s no build up anymore to the BBL. It use to be a huge event with heaps of promotion and excitement. Now no one even knows about it. It has been killed by 7/fox and CA.
They need to go back to what 10 was doing in the past.
I do hope 10 gets it but knowing CA, I know what to expect
Yeah the 273k on 7 & 155 on Fox gives around 430k, it’s not too bad and there would have been people on Kayo too. So that’s probably close 500k which is kind of on par with what 10 had when they had it. 10 probably averaged high 500k’s
Remember that the Foxtel number is national so you need to take about 50k off that total.
