Cricket TV Rights 2024/25-2030/31 (Seven/Foxtel)

Channel nine are laughing all the way to the bank tennis is better than cricket because there’s matches all the time and it does not finish early like some cricket matches especially when lousy teams come here .The next cricket broadcaster should get the rights to international matches like New Zealand and South Africa as well.

The problems with paramount with the a league and how some of their soccer coverage has been subpar might also be factor.

Not really. Seven wasn’t suing the AFL.

Have you watched the coverage? The OB is done properly with proper cameras etc etc. there was some teething with the live stream but the TV on air product is good. Don’t believe everything you read without actually watching the coverage.

Paramount still lacks basic controls like ‘start over’ and ‘skip forwards/backwards’

But the actual quality of the broadcast has no real issues.

This doesn’t really give a good detail description as to why you think 10 cover sport broadcasting better than say Seven.

You can’t compare as they don’t cover the same sport. You could compare their Horse Racing coverage for example.

happened with 7 and the tennis contract which meant 9 began airing the AO earlier. wouldn’t surprise me if the same happened with the cricket.

They’ve covered cricket and AFL better than seven in past over many years. Their sports coverage in the past is arguably up there with the best. The OB companies are by and large the same between all three networks as it is. Seven are suing CA and should be out of contention on that alone. They’re a disaster.

Sorry, but this is your personal opinion.

I’m still struggling to find anything in your statement as to why they cover sport better?

7 will need something big for summer like Gladiators to fill in the lack of our two favourite summer sports

Didn’t they reboot that once in the 2000s?

It could be a situation where CA were really happy with Foxtel/KAYO and would be disappointed to let them go, but the Paramount/10 offer might just be too good to turn away from? And agree with Cynic RE: Seven, hard to see (although not impossible considering 10’s woes and the direction Nine have headed).

Difference here my friend is the involvement of Foxtel.

Could someone with a sub summarise?

I didn’t realise it is as close as one-two weeks away from possibly being announced?!

If 10 do win the rights, will they start in 2024/25 or would Fox/Seven negotiate a way out of the rights for 10 to take on next summer?

2023/24

  • Pakistan (Tests)
  • West Indies (Tests, ODIs, T20s)

Vs

2024/25

  • Pakistan (ODIs, T20s)
  • India (Tests)

Not sure I agree with this - Seven has raised a contractual issue with CA that hasn’t been able to be resolved between the parties, the contract highly likely allows for contractual disputes to be heard by a court (as is happening in this instance) as a fairly standard clause, with the expectation from both sides that on signing the agreement that it would never come to that level of action.

Finding a resolution to the dispute is in both sides’ best interests, even if it only provides clarity on the points of contention.

Seven’s position seems a bit shaky on the face of what we’ve seen revealed in the media - but we don’t know the full story and contract law is complex. I’m a little bit surprised that CA would try and do a new deal while there was a dispute outstanding on the current deal.

Excluding Seven on the basis that there is an unresolved issue with the current deal would more than likely result in further (possibly nastier) legal action

Valueless contra?

There’s always has been some level of inertia in changing rights holders (especially when it has traditionally happened so rarely), but 10/Paramount’s inability to convert big offers to signed deals suggests that there’s something considerable at play (and I don’t buy the almost conspiracy theory that these sports are “scared” of News)

I suspect the latest round of offers is still falling short of CA’s expectations too - they won’t want a small increase on the current deal, they’d be hoping for decent uplift given what happened with other sports (and there has been a feeling by some commentators that the cricket is (laughably) under-valued)

The quality of the coverage has improved, initially, it was pretty patchy (although according to some A-League fans I know, it still lacks some decent non-match coverage) - there are still some issues with the streaming platform that P+ seem to be dragging their feet on fixing.

Points from the article:

  • Paramount has vowed has vowed to “restore cricket to its former prominence” and “provide the quality of coverage that television audiences and fans deserve”
  • They remain in a holding pattern as negotiations continue
  • Paramount have made an aggressive bid
  • There is strong intrest with all parties
  • Nick Hooley has told the networks/Foxtel to put up their best number in hopes of signing a 7-year deal
  • The Australian says Ten has bid “modestly” for cricket
  • Leaders at the network pointed to BBL’s previous success at Ten and have said that they would “deliver a premium product with greater visibility, consistency and flexibility across all forms of cricket” if Ten won rights.
  • Nine executives believe it is not crucial to have Cricket, while Seven played down the cricket bid
  • Officials are evaluating all bids on a criteria against cash/promotion
  • A Cricket Australia insider said that it would come down to cash and reach
  • A decision is expected in the next few weeks
  • A insider said a deal of under $200 million would be a disaster for CA
  • One fear for CA is the publicit it would get if it walked away from Foxtel/News Corp
  • Production costs are estimated at $40 million a year
  • Paramount Global executives has noted that the CEO Bob Bakish has talked up Cricket as a key sport to drive viewers to Paramount+
  • An insider has said that “It is unfortunate and disappointing that some of our competitors have made it their mission to perpetuate false and misleading stories."
  • She also said that the network has unmatched firepower thanks to its US backers

I feel like Seven would want to get out for the 2023-2024 season, but not Foxtel. So most likely it starts from 2024-2025.
