Cricket television rights 2018 (Foxtel/Seven)

Wow. I am speechless. Cricket Australia has made a dumb move to not include ten in any of the rights. They would have done a great job with the short forms of the game. I just hope this doesn’t see cricket suffer as a result of this deal.

A Statement From Network Ten.

Network Ten today issued the statement below in relation to cricket television rights negotiations.
Network Ten Chief Executive Officer, Paul Anderson, said: “We are disappointed that our bid for the cricket television rights was rejected.

“Network Ten turned the Big Bash League into the television phenomenon it is today and one of the most popular sports in Australia, a sport that all Australians were able enjoy for free. We had planned to extend that innovation to other forms of the game.

“Network Ten and our BBL team led by David Barham revolutionised the way cricket is broadcast in Australia and attracted new, younger viewers to the game. At the same time, we invested heavily in the Women’s Big Bash League, broadcasting matches in prime time for the first time and raising its profile significantly.

“We are proud of everything we achieved with the BBL and WBBL,” he said.

How do cricket rationalise $900m free to air over 6 years for $1b over 7 years behind a pay wall?

Did Ten and Nine play hard ball on streaming and seven just bend over and cop it?

Yeah a lot of this really doesn’t make sense to me. What is wrong with Cricket Australia? How much did Foxtel really offer to get this deal over the line?

Now Foxtel has every major sport in Australia.

But I’m still not convinced this will convert the country into a Fox-Sporting Nation.

Paying for TV just isn’t part of the Australian way. Ever since license fees were abolished we’ve come to expect live and free content. Maybe that’s entitled and starting to change with SVOD services, but its makes Australia different from everywhere else in the world.

It’s why Fox has never had more than 30% penetration. Their business model fundamentally clashes with these Australian values.

Speaking of paywalls!

I am surprised Fox make money tbh. In this day and age surely this pay tv model is destined to fail.

I am also really confused how a monopoly is allowed to flourish and destroy competition in the way it does.

How does ODI and T20 Internationals go exclusive to fox? It’s on the list. Is it not being simulcast.

CA are going to cop a hammering for all of this. Nearly every comment is negative.

Parts of it were in the 70s and 80s by various broadcasters including channel Ten, but usually only either the last session or part thereof.

They at one point aired tour matches including one in December 1976 - Pakistan vs WA (from 5:30pm on Channel 0), also note Channel 0 has no evening News on the Saturday

CA will have a hard time explaining to its Cricket Family and the general public why it has chosen Foxtel as its new broadcast partner.

I am guessing based on the statement that Ten only wanted to negotiate on terms that included broadcasting all Big Bash games (and possibly ODIs) and that didn’t fit in with what CA had to promise Foxtel to get their money.

Yeah.

What use is more money for grassroots when no-one wants to play…

Will Seven show all BBL games? Or just a few?

This just seems like a dud deal all around.

Hopefully Fox go broke at some point and all their sports rights are unsustainable.

The pendulum needs to swing back to FTA at some point.

What will happen to Cricket Australia website under the new deal? It is currently maintained by a joint venture of CA and Nine. Will it be brought back in-house? Will it lose some match highlights content to Fox Sports?

So hold on. Cricket Australia is allowing Foxtel to air ODI’s and T20 Internationals exclusively?

Seems like it - not sure how that’s going to work considering it would contravene the anti-siphoning list

One wonders why they wouldn’t sell the BBL separately to get more money. This seems really weird.

No one is subscribing to Foxtel for 16 games. They can also watch tests on FTA. People won’t subscribe for ODIs or T20s either.

If the NRL and AFL didn’t get Foxtel over 30% the cricket will not.
