COVID-19: Melbourne/Greater Victoria Re-Opens

I don’t understand why there is a difference. You could have 20 people at a funeral including 10 mourners plus the ministers & their offsiders and the staff from the funeral home, but only 5 are allowed at a wedding. Do they just pick numbers out of the air?

Weddings can be usually be postponed (I was at one last week originally scheduled for last year) funerals are a bit trickier to postpone.

Full list of restrictions for the latest statewide lockdown

I’d say its more to do with the type of activity at a wedding; singing, dancing, mingling, getting drunk and screaming at each other over the music would be more likely to transmit the disease than at a funeral, where it is more possible to social distance for most of the event.

Was it cold in Melbourne in February when the last lockdown occurred?

No it was very warm. The simple fact is that there was a leak from HQ in SA and obviously a link of transmission missed somewhere. It’s as simple as that and has nothing to do with how populous the city is or the the weather temp compared to other states.

Scomo’s press conference just now purpose seemed to pretty much urge everyone that can be vaccinated to do so ASAP. I really hope that one god thing that can come out of this lockdown is that it may encourage more people to go and do it rather than sit on it. Australia had a record 111,000 vaccinations yesterday and from tomorrow Pfizer will now be available in Victoria to the 40s age group.

but also don’t forget Melbourne is the most populous city in Australia

No it’s not; and even if that was correct, it isn’t the major cause of the current situation.

Depends on the metric. Sydney includes the central coast, Melbourne doesn’t include Geelong for example. Inner Melbourne also has the highest population density in the country (although possible for now with the lack of students).

Population wise, there’s not an overly significant difference between Sydney & Melbourne no matter what metric is used.

‘I will get fired up when contact tracers are attacked’

There were a few questions from reporters at today’s press conference asking whether contact tracers could have somehow prevented the lockdown.

Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton defended them in the presser, and has taken to Twitter to reinforce the message:

During the press conference, Professor Sutton said contact tracing did not “do magic”.

There’s a few factors Victorian authorities have flagged as contributing to the lockdown that contact tracers have no control over:

  • A case roaming the community for several days while symptomatic and infectious
  • They infected many others, meaning within the space of three days we’ve got 10,000 (and growing) primary and secondary contacts
  • A variant that is spreading faster than previous ones
  • We’ve got exposure sites from Cohuna in northern Victoria to the Mornington Peninsula

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has also praised Victorian contact tracers for the “tremendous job” they’re doing in response to the outbreak.

I definetly agree with slamming it shut to Victoria. for 7 days why take the risk? I love my home state and mark is doing a good job and he has plenty of support for this. Although he has the nurse and hospital issue to deal with at the moment.
Even though I live in the UK I do miss W.A hopefully I’ll be back in the future.

Yeh I’m not complaining. Just the use of the word by the media.

I find some of these restrictions quite stupid.

Firstly, I feel very sorry for regional Victoria in particular. Why should regional towns such as Mallacoota, Wangaratta, Echuca etc. be subject to wearing masks, limiting household gatherings etc.?

I also feel sorry for school students across the state who will have to work from home for the next week. After 2020, the last thing these kids need is to be away from the school grounds again. At the very least, VCE students should be allowed to remain in the classroom. Surely at least schools in regional Victoria can operate in the classroom?

Let’s hope this lockdown doesn’t extend beyond seven days.

Oh yeah right . The media have been pretty bad, they like to exploit the pandemic for ratings.

ok what if they closed off melbourne but yet the indian strain still got into regional vic??? i bet you anything you be complaning the govt didnt act sooner

Probably because they could not be bothered ringfencing Melbourne and Bendigo even though the Kiwis had done it successfully with Auckland earlier this year same with Mark in Westralia. Plus people lying.
In my opinion, NSW/SA should take over a few of those regions from VIC.

Also my Toilet Paper advice from February still remains, use the Herald Sun or the Age as Toilet Paper instead of hoarding it like how Americans were hoarding petrol two weeks ago.

Construction open? Congratulations to the union movement once again. Where would Labour be without you. :face_with_symbols_over_mouth:
