COVID-19: Greater Sydney & NSW Re-Opens

If this backfires on the NSW Government this will be ugly

Can’t NSW hold off on their arrogance until the pandemic is over? there have been so many examples overseas of smug leaders humiliating themselves once there is an outbreak. Arrogance breeds complacency, i’ve seen it happen so many times in my personal and working life. Even if NSW health is the best in the world and diamond standard, constantly hearing their chest beating would not give me any comfort if i was a NSW resident.

However, NSW chief health officer Kerry Chant said this morning one new case has been diagnosed after the 8pm cut off. She said the new case was a man who resides the northern peninsula in the Northern Beaches. She said the man was “quarantined for a period, then left quarantine and developed some symptoms (before) presenting for testing”.
Health Minister Brad Hazzard said new rules would be introduced in the next day or two to make face masks compulsory for fans at all large sporting events in NSW.

No, Queensland recorded a local case.

Damn.

Health Minister Brad Hazzard has confirmed the lockdown in the northern part of Sydney’s northern beaches will end at 12.01am on Sunday.

Essential shopping? I wonder if that includes David Jones?

There’s no other store.

Dr Kerry Chant said:

Of the three new locally-acquired cases, all three are linked to the Berala cluster — a woman and man in their 30s and a child who are close contacts of a previously reported case.

These three cases are linked to a man and woman in their 30s who were included in yesterday’s numbers and we’re investigating a potential exposure at an event on 29 December. This event is not the same as the one mentioned yesterday in which a positive case initially failed to recall that. That event took place on 27 December, but clearly this contact-tracing flows from those events.

A patient from Mount Druitt Hospital (in Western Sydney) has tested positive, along side his household contact. The emergency department at the hospital was shutdown for a few hours, but it has since came backup and running again.

These 2 cases will be included in tomorrow’s numbers.

Sydney seem to be bubbling along at 3-5 cases a day. But weird that it still is being transmitted. Shouldn’t be an issue but clearly it is for the other states so we need 0 for borders to reopen.

3 cases a day is far too low to justify a lockdown too

I wouldn’t expect borders to reopen until February the earliest. We will still see community transmission in the coming weeks with state leaders worried.

Don’t understand how if the NSW contact tracers are on top of this and there’s so few cases, that they can’t stop it… I suspect there’s more mystery cases than they’ll admit.

The contact tracers aren’t God lol… obviously there will be more community transmission in the coming weeks.

Really? They are bubbling along and if you dive into more than headline stats most new cases are close contacts of confirmed cases or linked to a cluster, a cluster doesn’t just die out immediately especially when positive cases live with others it is likely they will also catch COVID.

One thing is certain - lockdown is the very last measure a government should take. NSW have proven that effective Test, Trace and Isolate can contain outbreaks, lockdowns should only be used when it gets away from you and the tracing gets overwhelmed. Gladys and the NSW Health advisory team made that call with Northern Beaches hence why they’ve been in a pretty strict lockdown since before Christmas and have only just emerged from it now.
