It was a bit of an anxious wait when a news conference was called for 2pm today. But the announcement had been pretty much expected with checkpoints being reinstated at the the NSW-QLD border.
Itâs just not necessary based on what we currently know.
At the conference it was stated that the main reason for reintroducing the hard border was that people from the designated Hot Spot had been ignoring the ban on entering Queensland and had been caught at random checks - almost 200 so far.
Police:
During the period we have been doing random intercepts, we have turned around 81 persons and placed 112 into quarantine and that was up to about 10:30am.
Checkpoints have been setup at some ACT-NSW border crossings. Australian Traffic Network on Twitter:
Have we heard any changes on the travel bubble between New Zealand and NSW, as the result of Northern Beaches cluster?
Isnât it only one way anyway?
There was talk we could start going to NZ in January, iâd say we can forget about that now. they will want 28 days covid free, which would push it to atleast March.
Essentially yes, arrivals into NZ have to quarantine for a fortnight.
Fingers crossed this cluster gets stomped down ASAP and we can move towards a (proper) trans Tasman bubble.
I reckon these clusters might make NZ reconsider. A week ago when they were considering this Australia was seemingly in a good spot but now weâve had another outbreak. If this is likely to keep happening they might not want the risk, especially given it is likely we should have wider distribution of vaccines by the second half of next year. Maybe theyâll just hold it out.
I hope Iâm wrong though. My brother, his wife and my niece have decided to move to NZ next month (his wife is a citizen). They are having another baby so if borders are closed when itâs born it could be a while before any family can visit it.
I should clarify, itâs about the current bubble for New Zealand residents visiting NSW.
The Northern Beaches cluster will make the Kiwis reconsidering their trip to the state either for sightseeing or catch up with family and friends.
Theyâre not going to come if they have to quarantine on their return.
How many cases tomorrow? Iâm saying around 10.
Iâm not sure whether it was in NSW or another state, but I believe they are able to fairly quickly process negative tests (the positive ones get a little more attention)
How about we donât guess? Weâve been fairly loose on the rules in this COVID threads, but I really dont like this morbid concept of guessing how many cases will be the next day. If you want to scaremonger, go and join the water drips on Twitter
Not sure many are coming for sightseeing given the 2 weeks quarantine on return.
Youâd have to be loaded and/or with a lot of time on your hands to do it.
Do you have to have a reason to enter NZ from Australia at the moment?
Amen! This is how anxiety and depression gets worse, I can assure you.
You have to be a New Zealand citizen/resident or an Australian citizen who normally resides in NZ, along with others with a critical purpose (diplomats, approved sports teams etc).
Scaremonger? I donât think predicting less cases is scaring people, like I did yesterday.
I think the people that are screaming for a lockdown and mandatory masks etc are the ones that need to be pulled into line.
Who wouldâve thought that people advocating for a small, but simple contribution to slowing the spread of a virus should be asked to be pulled in line.
People asking for mask wearing arenât doing it for kudos, theyâre asking for a reason.
I donât think turning it into some sort of betting game helps anyone.
