COVID-19: Greater Sydney & NSW Re-Opens

It does for me

Cheers, that makes more sense now.

The anti-vaxer brigade has begun. It is like the Ron Desantis from Florida and that Texas governor all over again. People’s freedoms blah blah.

I am sorry but if you are not vaccinated you forfeit your right to do certain things.

A woman in her 90s from northern Sydney died at Greenwich Hospital yesterday, the 29th COVID-related death from this outbreak.

64 cases were infectious in the community, and the isolation status of 71 remains under investigation. 2 previously reported cases have been excluded following further investigation.

CHO Kerry Chant said the Tamworth lockdown was related to a young woman exposed in Newcastle. Dr Chant said the woman travelled to Tamworth on the evening of August 4, arriving on August 5. The woman spent the morning in Tamworth before returning to Newcastle later that day. Five venues in Tamworth have been listed as exposure sites.

Oh no, I feel sorry for you and fellow Tamworth residents.

Perhaps set up a new Northern NSW outbreak thread? Or change the title of this thread to NSW outbreak (because it clearly spread well beyond Sydney now)?

Has that just been announced?

Wow. I think this is gonna be a nightmare for Gladys, politically speaking. She’s been recalcitrant to introduce a ring of steel around Sydney. Surely that has to be considered now because it’s leaking even faster into the regions than earlier on in the Sydney second wave.

by the sounds of it , it was just annouced

Time to lock the entire state down. The risk of the virus being transmitted from Sydney to regional areas is just too great. Either that or do that ‘ring of steel’. Anything less is not going to cut it.

All of the Premier’s say they act on health advice so isn’t it really Dr Chants failure to contain this?

The whole NSWs government is to blame for this fuck up! What a bloody mess.

That is what they say, however the government dictates what happens in the end, if they believe more or less is needed, they have the capacity to do so.

It’s my understanding that unlike Victoria’s CHO Prof Sutton and potentially some other states’ CHOs that Dr Chant doesn’t have the same authority to impose restrictions, she may give advice, but it’s up to the government to impose restrictions.

From that’s there’s two things I take away.

  1. If it were solely up to governments to impose restrictions we’d have many more deaths and cases of covid over the last 18 months because they are politically unpopular decisions to make (despite the ensuing electoral success some incumbent state governments have enjoyed)
  2. Either Dr Chant has been providing advice for stronger restrictions for many weeks and the nsw government has been reluctant to accept all the advice or she has been influenced by the government to provide less than ideal advice so they can claim they have not inflicted severe measures on their population.

I wonder whether certain regional towns even want to lockdown? If they’re mostly made up of older people, they might already be fully vaccinated and therefore might not be as afraid of the virus.

As someone who lives in a regional area just passed the Greater Sydney border the mood is put us in lockdown and stop this before it gets out of control.

We haven’t had any scares with COVID but everyone is doing what they should without real complaint mask wear inside is 100% and close to 70% outside.

Regional people are just trying to do the right thing and get it all over with. Even with high rates of vaccination in the elderly they are still very concerned of it coming into the area.

We were expecting it when there were cases announced in Newcastle, then it was only a matter of time when Armidale was locked down

NSW state MP for Lismore Janelle Saffin called for a snap three day lockdown on the North Coast this afternoon. Instead it got seven days.
