COVID-19: Discussion of Impact 😷

Even hospitalizations is not so important now. The people going in are discharged within a day or 2. Younger healthier requiring very little medical treatment. As many are getting discharged as go in. Essentially

COVID deaths still running well well well well below normal flu deaths (around 100 a week compared to 300 or so a week in summer for flu Over the last few years)

Very interesting. This is a real test to how we will all eventually need to live with the virus. Although I’m glad that we can see how this pans out in some other countries for a few months before we are ready to take any risks like this.

Chris is right here. We need to educate the public that some cases around the community is what we are going to have to live with and it’s as acceptable as any other risk in society.

I don’t know why so many journalist need to say this incessantly as if it makes them seem more intellectual. Its not groundbreaking. I don’t think anyone was ever under the impression that we would have an elimination strategy with lockdowns forever, especially after the vaccines were developed. Afaik, the elimination strategy has been a huge success, but was only ever temporary until we were vaccinated.

The perfect covid strategy would have been Australias/NZ/Taiwan’s strategy for the first year then have the UK’s vaccine rollout and reopening plan in the second year. Its a shame I dont think any country will pull it off. China might be the closest.

The Victorian Government has announced COVID restrictions in Melbourne will ease from 11.59pm tomorrow (Thursday) so they will be brought into line with regional Victoria.

Health Minister Martin Foley said at the press conference that restrictions could have been eased even further if not for the slow vaccine rollout and COVID outbreaks in NSW, QLD, NT and WA.

Sounds like a way to force people to use my health record based on this description:

It would connect to the government’s My Health Record system to provide real-time access to not only COVID-19 vaccination and test data but other immunisations such as against yellow fever, alerts on allergies, and organ donation status.

However I can see why they have to do this as this part of the Medicare app opens a browser within the app to go to the page where you download your records as a PDF.

We have come a long way. Masks are mandatory in most settings when there are 0 daily cases. Not having a go but they have a clear strategy now when community transmission exists.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk also praised ten staff at Sunshine Coast University Hospital, who exposed themselves to COVID to save the life of a patient. The patient was being moved from the COVID ward to the medical unit when they went into anaphylactic shock due to an adverse reaction to contrast dye used for a scan.
Those ten staff members are now in 14 day quarantine because the patient (who is now out of intensive care unit) had the Delta variant. CHO Jeannette Young confirmed they were all wearing PPE.

All but one had been fully vaccinated and that one had one shot.

I thought things were going back to normal in the UK? A friend of mine has just said her school have gone back to remote learning.

In a couple weeks yes it is highly likely that they’ll eliminate all existing restrictions, however certain caveats to that apply (although these are going away for fully vaccinated / children come mid-August) to that such as requiring to self-isolate for 10 days if you get a positive COVID test - and when they’re getting 30k positives a day, that’s an awful lot of people over the course of a couple weeks.

As for your particular example, it’s likely there was someone COVID positive, it’s an exposure site and they’ve had to send the school back to remote learning temporarily.
