COVID-19: Discussion of Impact 😷

I think this may be a case of too little too late.

was there any explanation why we didn’t do this for UK and US when they were in worse positions than india is now?

Is it the strain in India? I’ve heard it’s the worst of them all?

it is beaucase there a higher numbers in HQ that have there origins from india .there was a jump in cases from april 16. jumping from 90 the previous week to 143 the following week just recently. 95% of cases in howard springs was from india

Was a Airbus flight into Hong Kong from India with 50 positives onboard. We can’t have a 787 or whatever come in with 100 positives.

Does it mean people cannot fly from India to Australia through a third country (e.g. United Arab Emirates or Singapore) at least until May 15?

no. there also closed to india

The UK and US have never come close to the crisis India is in now. There are literally people dying in the streets while waiting desperately for medical attention.

Healthcare infrastructure is completely overwhelmed. The virus is spreading like wildfire through slums and even working/middle class communities which are densely populated and have very basic standards of sanitation. The official figures represent a fraction of the true case numbers. People are being forced to wait upwards of a week just to get a sample taken, and the most vulnerable members of the community who don’t have money or connections/influence aren’t able to access testing at all.

And while the West has been able to pull case numbers back down over time, India simply does not have the resources to achieve a similar change in trajectory. This crisis will continue for months, not weeks. The final death toll will be staggering.

The travel bubble between NZ and Western Australia will resume from Midday NZT tomorrow (8am WA time) after it was paused on Friday night following the lockdown announcement.

And the answer is to leave stranded Australians there?

The answer is to let people be accountable for their own decisions and actions rather than imposing that risk on others.

Well that is fair for those that did make a choice but suspending repatriation flights are for those that do not have a choice and have been waiting for the government for months

And I still don’t think it is fair to just be like oh well you choose to go there you deserve to die on the streets… yes be held accountable by paying more or something but you can’t be held accountable if you are dead.

People who have been waiting ā€œmonthsā€ went in the full knowledge of what leaving Australia meant at the end of last year. The only people I have any real sympathy for are those who have been actively trying to get home for a year, and I doubt there are many (if any) in that scenario.

That’s a ridiculous assertion that you are making. It is the locals with no access to resources who are suffering the brunt of this crisis, not the wealthy (and certainly not wealthy foreigners from countries like Australia).

That is not true at all. Some are there since the beginning of the pandemic and cannot afford to come home and are waiting for the Australian government to assist. That is what a repatriations.

Quite a high chance that something similar may occur in WA in the coming week, as per this mornings press conference in which it was reported that 78 of the 79 passengers on a Malaysia Airlines flight that operated KUL-PER on Saturday had originated from India, with 4 positive cases already reported as of this morning.

Those repatriation flights that the govt has organised aren’t free for passengers. The cost is still considerable and on par with commercial airline fares.
