COVID-19: Discussion of Impact šŸ˜·

the health misters office here in vic is saying tonight there is no truth in uptins tweet

We had that nonsense all week in Perth last week , so many unsubstantiated claims of anywhere up to 30 cases. Never happened.

The SA border closing is just ridiculous. Anyone working at the Holiday Inn has been isolating since Sunday now so if any new cases now pop up there should be a very minimal (if any) further exposure period whilst infectious.

The border stayed open throughout the entire Black Rock cluster which had case numbers in the high 20s and had more people out in the community before being detected. This cluster seems much lower risk as it is people who are tested frequently so have minimal infectious/exposure period. Of those that tested positive they have only really gone to a handful of low risk locations and the cases being detected (as far as I know) are directly related to the Inn and already in isolation.

The updated tweet proving his ā€˜sourceā€™ was a screenshot of a ā€˜leakedā€™ txt message from Sunday that says on Monday they are announcing that from Wednesday they are moving to a lockdown - that he shared on Thursday.

This is the level of Australian journalists today.

Is it odd the numbers are late today?

Remember this is the same newspaper that had a front page story during Melbourneā€™s second wave with a graph indicating that Melbourne was going to hit 1000+ cases per day for a period of time. They claimed to have access to ā€œsecret modellingā€ to justify the story but they literally just took it from a random post on twitter that had no basis. Yet this became front page news. Talk about extreme scare tactics based off nothing.

Looks like no further positive cases from yesterdayā€™s late afternoon announcement in Victoria.

Thatā€™s great to see such big testing numbers and it seems that the only cases are directly linked to people who have been to the hotel.

100% whilst cases may continue to grow and whilst theyā€™ll be considered local transmission they so far touch wood are contained to the Holiday Inn - there is no evidence of community spread yet even amongst close contacts.

The fact SA have shut the border despite having no community spread thus far makes it even more ridiculous, literally jumping at shadows.

When you see a state like SA shutting borders itā€™s essentially them saying that they donā€™t have confidence in Victoria managing this outbreak, even though there is no evidence of community transmission outside anyone working in the hotel. Itā€™s astounding that a much bigger cluster over New Years and there was no change but this has come so swiftly.

It seems now when cases are being classed as the ā€œUK strainā€ it is going to keep being used to try and justify much harsher restrictions (lockdowns in Perth / Brisbane and now SA closing their border to Vic). Yet each of these outbreaks have remained very much contained. We need to accept now that this strain is becoming the more dominant strain of the virus, which means we obviously need to implement stricter measures in Hotel Quarantine to prevent these leaks but we also canā€™t just run scared every time there is a case either.

NSW Health also said on Twitter:

NSW Health is continuing to screen passengers arriving on flights from Victoria and any person who enters NSW from Victoria by air or rail is required to complete a passenger declaration form.

The Holiday Inn Melbourne Airport has been added to the list of high-risk locations for screening of these passengers and NSW Health is contacting any person already in NSW who was at the hotel from 27 January to 9 February advising them to get tested immediately and isolate for 14 days since being there, regardless of the result.

People who have been to any of the public exposure sites listed on the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services website during the relevant times must follow the associated public health advice.

Investigations continue into the source of infection of a returned overseas traveller from the Wollongong area who tested positive for COVID-19 after being released from hotel quarantine. Further information will be released as it becomes available.

Which is total bullshit because theyā€™re doing a great job of early notifications, rapdily updating exposure locations, weā€™ve got really good testing etc etcā€¦

Is the lack of confidence around the government not throwing us into lockdown like SA, WA and QLD have done after 1 caseā€¦

From 1am on Saturday, border declaration passes will be needed for anyone travelling to Queensland from Victoria.

The Holiday Inn cluster has grown to 10 with a additional two new cases.

Close contacts that should have been in isolation for a few days now. Itā€™s not unexpected that we are going to get a trickle of cases from these but if they are isolated it shouldnā€™t be much of a concern.

Wasnā€™t the concern the large number of places the infected QH workers visited the issue, combined with the B.1.1.7 (UK) strain?

I donā€™t like the border closures, but this past year has shown itā€™s probably better to go hard quickly & hopefully for a short time, instead of waiting the 7 to 10 days of possible incubation in the community before reacting.
