The Victorian Government has published advertisements in interstate papers today about the new permit system.

This is almost as bad as when Queensland was running ads in Sydney telling everyone they can’t come.

The Commonwealth government has locked down the border between NSW and the JBT. There is only one road in and out.

Victorians no long have to get tested and isolate until the result is negative before entering Queensland. Now only is showing symptoms.

VIC health minister Martin Fowley has told ABC Melbourne he takes full responsibility for the 2 hr delay in getting the permit system up and going "[There was ] a really complex system of legal directions which were signed and delivered on time by our public health team, backed up by a couple of bugs in the IT system from our friends at Services Victoria which required some extra background work on IT systems.

There we go -

The first of 15 charter flights bringing roughly 1,200 players, support staff and tennis officials will arrive in Melbourne on Thursday evening, Victorian Police and Emergency Services Minister Lisa Neville said.

I still think in a week where a bunch of people trying to return will have had their returns cancelled because of the caps being cut in other states, it’s just a bad look to be using all this capacity for a tennis tournament. If we can do extra capacity, we should be doing it for everyone.

Especially bad when a tennis player from overseas can come in but a Victorian who is in Sydney can’t.

Australia really isn’t doing enough for their overseas residents. While they are still bringing in over 1000 people for a tennis tournament

The article clearly states that the Australian Open will not affect incoming flight caps. i.e. 15 chartered flights bringing 1200 people into Australia for the Australian Open does not reduce the caps on returning travellers. So Melbourne will still take in the committed number of returning travellers, which also has not reduced as a result of the recent national cabinet decision where some states are reducing numbers.

I get the point that you are trying to make though - they could bring in 1200 Aussies instead. It is different though as it’s a completely different program. The level of testing, quarantine and bubble arrangements that the players are under far supersedes standard travellers. The amount of money invested into these measures, the tournament (including additional safety measures) and what it will bring to the Melbourne economy (which is much needed after what we went through last year) is huge.

Honestly surprised by this. I expected the cases to bubble along a little longer than they did. Really good job to Victoria and the contract tracing team that wrapped that all up really well.

A lot of countries don’t have the same travel restrictions that Australia has and upon returned citizens they just need to self quarantine at home (probably the reason why the virus is out of control in those countries). I am not sure what sort of intake New Zealand is taking.

Queensland - 2 new cases in hotel quarantine, no community transmission. 26 active cases.

6 cases are of the UK variant. 4 overseas traveller, the cleaner and partner.

Becasue all these cases are at The Grand Chancellor and all on the same floor, all people who are in the hotel will be moved. As a precaution staff will be tested as well as people who have left the hotel will be tested again.

129 guests currently under quarantine at the Grand Chancellor will undergo a ā€œquarantine resetā€ and be moved to different hotels.

You do have to wonder how many people are getting covid from the hotel system. Which begs the question whether this is the most effective system. I know there was a lot of transmission in the Adelaide medi hotels as well.

In the last couple of days the QLD CHO has said that for most breaches of quarantine around Australia the method of transmission has not been identified and may never be known.
