COVID-19: Discussion (2022 Onwards)

All these people continue to be out and about and having and hosting events, so none of this news is surprising.

We’re going to see a lot more of this I’m afraid. All eyes for if Tom Hanks is spotted on the Gold Coast again :eyes:

The reality is, it’s absolutely everywhere. So many people I know have contracted it seemingly out of nowhere. A lot of other people have bizarrely seemed to not get it (negative on a spuriously taken RAT) despite being in high risk scenarios with others for hours, and then being symptomatic.

I’m not discounting what you’ve said… but as soon as I read it, I thought of this:

It will be like a miracle

I think it’s a little different. This will burn out.

Medical experts likened Omicron’s trajectory to scaling up and down Everest. You had this huge upward trajectory, then after the peak you had a huge downward trajectory.

Keep an eye on the US looks like they are very close to the peak, probably at some point across the next week.

The UK has a shocking pandemic record with so many mistakes along the way. The response was horrific.

However, The vaccine roll out was brilliant and the UK is the most boosted nation on earth.

UK is also leading the way on treatment drugs and sequencing of the virus.

Also worth noting: due to weather and lifestyle the UK has incredibly high flu deaths every year. A bad year is 35,000 a year. So if we didn’t have the covid deaths of 150,000 we would have had up to 70,000 for deaths in this time.

COVID was worse as we had no vaccines and no treatment.

But flu has largely disappeared the last 22 months. COVID replaced those deaths. When you look at excess deaths - the correct measure - The numbers are not nearly as shocking - around half.

Also a normal mid January week would see around 700 flu deaths a season. COVID is currently killing around half what the flu would in a normal January

So in that Context - January 2021 is going to prove to be less deadly than a Normal January. Much less deadly.

Report came out today that there are less people in ICU right now than any January in the last 5 years

UK weather and indoor life means respiratory diseases always batter the UK very hard.

I wouldn’t put it past Mr Bones to test positive, this thing gets in everywhere.

Hurley had a booster shot as well. And still got the virus.

I thought boosters would still protect you from severe illness or symptoms of COVID. I don’t recall them emphasising that boosters will prevent you from getting the virus especially Omicron.

Though at least it will give you the best chance to not be infected.

Yes, I think there is a misconception that boosters will stop the Omicron virus, but as we’ve seen, it doesn’t.

They still haven’t had enough time to adapt the vaccines. But they will stoP you from getting as sick.

Hopefully this is the start of the downfall of this wave. Queensland and SA are still on an upward trajectory but hopefully they’ll reached the peak soon and start the sudden descent.

It’s still probably 40,000 all up in NSW. But hopefully we have seen the peak.

Feel like the next fortnight we will be riding the crest of the wave, but still too early to be confident even with today’s numbers.
NSW should be the lead indicator on whether this is the case and Victoria about a week behind.

Australia was 115,000 cases on Jan 8 - exactly one week from New Years.

I think that will be be the peak.

For now

Interesting. Still don’t think nightclubs have high transmission?

will be much higher than 40,000 given NSW isn’t registering RAT results and lots of positive cases not getting tested. The estimate given last week that the actual infection rate is probably up to 5 times what is being reported.

I don’t think so.
It’s just a reflection of a change in strategy.
NSW have told people if they have a positive RAT they don’t need a PCR - and they’re not recording RAT results. Of course it’s going to go down.

I drove into NSW yesterday and all the electronic information signs over the highway (every one I saw) said “Positive Rapid Antigen Test result? You do not need a PCR test.”

Seems to me like they’re trying to make the numbers look low, when i’m sure they’re still sky high
