The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the largest Mormon denomination, has cancelled all public services and meetings worldwide until further notice.
Looking at Twitter, there are increasing number of individual churches around the world that have cancelled services for this Sunday, including Lakewood in Houston, Texas, one of the biggest churches in the US.
Have Catholic churches stopped the partaking of the communion wine from the shared chalices? Orthodox churches doing their communions with shared spoons would be another virus haven as well.
Continuing discussion that started in the Kayo sport area where I suggested that that streaming service may get an increase in subscriptions because especially AFL and NRL fans wonāt be able to go to matches.
Iām thinking that TV will turn into the number one option for entertainment as the virus pandemic increases its impact. Many of the usual recreational activities will not be available so perhaps that will see an increase in TV viewing. Not just FTA where especially news numbers may go up, but Netflix, Stan, Foxtel and Fetch may see subs go up or at least stop dropping in the case of some.
Outside of news programming and whatever crowdless Sports events remain on our screens, I actually think Gogglebox* could benefit in the ratings from the Coronavirus crisis. In times like these, a show based around people watching TV seems like something I could see viewers really connecting with.
*That is, if Gogglebox remains in production for the remainder of the season. Iām half expecting to hear words to the effect of āDue to the Coronavirus, weāre taking a break and hope to be back sometime when the crisis is overā at the end of next weekās episode.
Not sure about Kayo seeing an uptick in subscribers given that most/all sporting events will be cancelledā¦that has already happened with cricket so I wonāt be watching. Will suspend my subscription once/if these last two ODI matches are played. I think itās inevitable that both the AFL and NRL seasons will be suspended, perhaps cancelled altogether depending on the severity and duration of the outbreak. A truncated competition resuming in say June/July is still possible.
I agree with Netflix and the others- but if the lockdown is for months then eventually people will run out of content here, too. Hollywood is also suspending its operations so there will be a big dearth of new content in the months ahead.
But really- couldnāt give a stuff about entertainment so long as the outbreak isnāt too severe. Need to adopt the old āstiff upper lipā attitude.
This new travel restrictions will have huge ramifications for the NRL, Super Rugby and A-League, all of which have NZ-based teams. Will they have to play their matches away from NZ?
