I mean in the sense of the government just wanting to knock c31 off
I would love to see community stations band together to offer a single FreeView like application with access to IPTV via Googleās Android TV Live Channels app and Apple TVs inbuilt offerings. Probably wonāt happen without some sort of investment though.
they have no plans for the spectrum, why kick CTV off the air then?
Thatās exactly why I said itād the stupidest thing I have read.
Exactly what every single person involved with Community TV has been saying since this was first announced.
Anyone know when the episode of Vasillās Garden aired when he visited the house of the accused killer??
ACA saying it was aired a couple of weeks ago even tho footage looks like it was from 1990s???
Quoting Malcolm Turnbull:
We are also keen to encourage commercial and national broadcasters to commence their transition to MPEG-4 only broadcasting, with the aim that every service would move to an MPEG-4 standard. The Government expects that a transition such as this would be industry managed.
MPEG-4 uses spectrum much more efficiently and would allow broadcasters to use their existing spectrum to deliver more channels and content including in relatively bandwidth hungry formats such as high definition if they choose to do so.
In the short term, to allow for this transition to MPEG-4, the Government intends to free up the spectrum known as the sixth channel to assist in the testing and migration to this more efficient technology.
ā¦
The spectrum review will now consider whether the sixth channel spectrum will be replanned for alternative non-broadcasting uses, perhaps as the basis for a second digital dividend.
Finally, following a move to an MPEG-4 standard, in order to continue our drive to achieve maximum spectrum efficiency the Government will encourage spectrum sharing between television broadcasters. We expect the national broadcasters to lead the way in this regard, with the commercials to follow.
i.e. They want to move all the channels to MPEG-4, resulting in less bandwidth used and fewer RF channels and thus allowing for a second restack, culminating in a sell off even more TV spectrum to the telcos. Basically, community is going away so the government can earn some more $$$ from the telcos.
Community TV wasnāt actually using the āsixth channelā so if thatās his reasoning then they could use the sixth channel for MPEG4 and leave Community TV alone.
Also TV networks seem to be using MPEG4 well enough across both SD and HD channels without needing to ātestā via an extra channel.
C31 Melbourne have just sent out a tweet advising that community TV has been given a 6 month extension to their broadcasting licence.
(edit: beat me to it @TelevisionAU!)
Iām yet to hear that the 144-hour long āLast Week Liveā broadcast wonāt be airing as scheduled on C31 Melbourne (plus 31 Digital Brisbane / 44 Adelaide / WTV Perth), but shall find out.
It will most likely go to air in some form. However I doubt on the schedule or content that was originally planned.
Is there anyway to allow C31ās to broadcast a SD channel for good while also selling off/using the rest of the spectrum?
Well unless the ABC or SBS let them onto their multiplex no.
No because the government is revoking their broadcasting licenceā¦ now in six months time, although hopefully it will lead to another extension.
Iāve just returned from Jindabyne, NSW, where there is a TV Channel called "Snowy Mountains Television. According to their website, it is on Channel 350.
When I turned in on TV and on my laptop recorder, the channel name was āProg 1ā.
From what I saw of the channel, what was broadcast was outdoor activity program/documentaries on sports like BMX riding, kayaking, surfing and skiing (of course).
Here is what the watermark looks like during programing:
<img src="/uploads/default/original/2X/9/95701fdaac3c631a96955d365ea05507b479993e.jpg" width=300" height=><img src="/uploads/default/original/2X/1/156140b39dadf278d7badbe4054295a11f4c5cdb.jpg" width=300" height=>
The watermark always stays on screen, even in commercials and promos/channel presentation graphics.
There was limited channel on-air promotions. I saw these Idents once (the recording of the 45 sec one is abit glitchy, unfortunately):
Here are two commercials for local businesses that I saw:
And this āKebabz Classicā clip which played before some programs. Iām not sure if it is a commercial or something else:
Sounds like a HPON similar to other channels in places like Darwin and Broome.
Yes it is.
Interesting that those channels are allowed to go to air untouched but the community channels in the cities that would reach far more people and present more substantial benefit to community and industry are being bullied off the air.
The Darwin HPON is owned by Aboriginal Broadcasting Australia. In addition to their main channel they have three multichannels, and they also operate an Aboriginal FM community radio station and a narrowcast FM dance station.
Wasnāt my question, my question was technical.
