Community Radio

Live report I like on a Wednesday night but it seems he is taking a break. If you like the Beatles music I don’t mind Instant Karama at 11am on a Thursday. It is a bit of a challenge to listen live for me at work.

Other than that for me, its a different option for me when driving around the district. Unless footy or cricket is on I prefer to listen to community stations and those are HHH FM or SWR for me (and I don’t fiddle with my mobile and listen to online stations, as sometimes forget to hook it up). The general music mix (when no programming) is ok quite varied. I probably prefer SWR 999.

These days at home my music station on analog radio is probably 2UE (do to limited reception of the above stations at my location). They play some good 60s music have not heard for years (esp at night). Although the Mix cloud has open up a new world for me too, but sometimes it is easier just to listen to normal radio.

@Ant5476 thanks for the maps! Probably the Dural one is the best for me being selfish I guess the one further north would cover more bushland is the disadvantage, and people in Pennant Hills like myself may miss out (unless you got a house on a hill in the right direction). My somewhat over simplified rule of thumb is if you can’t get consistent reception in a kitchen/lounge room with a fully extended telescopic aerial using a decent Sangean radio (unless you physically go outside) then you are on the fringe zone. If the Dural site was used, it might make HHH coverage as good as SWR is today which covers a good slab of Western Sydney. Although I am sure they would need to limit coverage to the western side. From the South East to the North can have full power. Brooklyn/Wiseman Ferry is a problem but the population is small there.

101 FM Logan sounding terrible recently - like a low bit rate digital station. Perhaps due to an outside broadcast this morning? But also seems the same compressed sound on other days this week.

Agreed. Music from 101 FM Logan’s station library has sounded poor for a few years now.

Some of the voice tracks of sponsorship announcements also suffer this. Many sound as if they were recorded in a bedroom wardrobe and emailed at a low bitrate.

89.9 ‘Hawkesbury Gold’ currently using the more powerful 'Hawkesbury Radio 'transmitter. Unfortunately for ‘Hawkesbury Gold’ & listeners, the RDS output is as per ‘Hawkesbury Radio’.

Got a bit of a shock this morning when streaming between a couple of Indigenous community stations from the Kimberley - 6FX Fitzroy Crossing and 6WR Kununurra. 6FX still the same as I remember listening to at nights on the radio from Darwin in 2014, with a strong community focus and loads of country and Indigenous music. But it appears 6WR has gone the whole Territory FM route in that it almost sounds like a commercial station with professional voiceover sweepers and a completely revamped mostly AC/classic hits music format!

Assume this is the place but for those in Melbourne, there is an awesome comedy show on SYN 90.7FM at the moment- called I want to be Famous. It is awesome!!

I was wondering how easy is overmodding is to fix? Is it simply a variable that can be easily tweaked on a computer ? Just notice the other day, on a decent radio I got SWR in good stereo but you can hear HHH fighting in the background. Anyway its just one of those things I guess.

I just was curious from the radio tech guys is this a real difficult thing to fix at the radio station end. Or could it be that they are now running at spec and it is hard to avoid overmodding when you are 3.5 km as the crow flies to the transmitter even on a good radio.

Not hard to fix at all. It’s a bit more elaborate, but basically the “volume” is too high, they just need to turn down the input to the tx. Whether it can be tweaked on a computer or has to be done manually would depend on what gear is in use.

@Laoma overmodding is irrelevant of distance to tx/signal strength, but it and signal strength will contribute to adjacent channel IF.

Hope that answers your question

Hi all, just a bit of info on Memphis Mayhem Radio 101.3fm. Yes we are having a go with this frequency ll concentrating the fm broadcast on the area it is allocated to. We are a rock n roll , rockabilly, etc station, playing older music but heavily supporting new music within the genre . We also have programs dedicated to other genres. The station is run by a team of locals, and even though we kicked off just before covid threw everything into a mess, we have been growing well and are continuing to expand our programming which most of is produced in our studios. As most of us here were either born here or have been here for the good part of our lives we have a big interest in making our station successful. Happy for any import or ideas. All the best

Thanks Matt. I noticed it impacts 2MCR and SWR999. I might drop a note to hhh fm I wonder if I drove to Blacktown how SWR would impact the other stations in the reverse.

Hi @Rebb58, thanks for making the effort to find and sign up to Mediaspy to introduce your station.

Good to see the Seagulls club is being utilised, was once overflowing with bus loads arriving, full of Queensland residents who lived in a pokie free world, keen to sample the novelty I’m told.

How are you finding coverage from the NBN pole at the Terranora AM site? 2kW reaching where you need it to @Rebb58 ? Likely no concern to 101.1 Logan?

I recall Mark Chapman Smith was in a different location and covered a distance well outside the licensed area.

Hi
We are still only on a low transmitter until we get some money in. Unfortunately when we kicked off we were forced to share airtime with SMITH ( who refused to go to air) so we were on 3 1/2 days per week then dead air for the rest of the week. It made it pointless to try and get sponsors. We eventually were granted 24/7 , but then not long after that the fires /floods etc hit, so once again sponsors were difficult, then of cause Covid which really shut the sponsors down. And as we had not been on air for more then 2 years we could not receive any government assistance, so it has been a very difficult road. We are just starting to see a turn around now. We still have managed to produce our own shows, train 13 announcers, produce our own CD and getting a pretty big following not only local but nationally and internationally.
Once we get some money in we will be able to purchase a bigger transmitter etc and eliminate the couple of local black spots we have. Unlike Smith we are concentrating our FM broadcast to the area it is designated to, so we wont be trying to get the signal anywhere near 101.1 Logan. We are certainly getting there, but still a long way to go.

92.5 Music FM - Moss Vale, NSW. The time is now 5.14pm & hearing a young kid live announcing on air, giving regular ID’s too. Must be years since I last heard a live announcer on air from this station. Everything I’ve heard on air from Music FM over recent years has been scheduled music programming.

Good to hear some young ones still interested in radio & getting involved in community radio. :+1:
