We have been heard several times in NZ via Es. Via tropo, I don’t think anyone has logged us from further afield than you at Newcastle. There are a lot of pesky 88.9s in NSW that cruel long distance reception from 2BRW.
Not only is 3HCR Omeo back from the dead…it’s also streaming on the CBAA app!
A look at their studio & in town TX site pic on 2024 Google Streetview shows what appears to show a mixed rather than vertical polarisation FM TX antenna for 90.9MHz.
Some other 3HCR pics & info on the
website going back to 2022. Search 3HCR.
Yes, that is about the only thing recent-ish I can find on 3HCR. This domain has apparently expired:
I can’t find any social media presence either. The studio also looks half abandoned.
The 2022 stories cite a lack of volunteers and local programming, unsurprising for a small aging town. I doubt that situation has changed for the better in the interim. The FB posts also mention that 3HCR was once a thriving station, probably in the pre Web 2.0 era.
Where community radio may hang on is in isolated communities; 3MGB Mallacoota still has a decent amount of local content and was invaluable in the fires (like Braidwood FM). Community radio also does well in prosperous retirement areas such as the Southern Highlands and the Mid North Coast, where self funded retirees face lower opportunity costs to volunteer.
I think it can more than ‘hang on’ in metro areas and larger provincial centres, where there is the population to support it and as people search for local options when they find local commercial radio too safe.
Some stations like 2NUR and Hope1032 are quite well resourced from what I’ve heard.
17 years on the same show and on the same station is impressive.
On January 17, 2025 the staff and volunteers of Noosa FM 101.3 celebrated 30 years on air with an estimated 250,000 plus hours of music played and recently upgraded on-air and podcast studios thanks to a grant from the Sunshine Coast Community Bendigo Bank.
I don’t recall it on air 30 years ago, not even testing.
It’s a closed shop. Numerous experienced community and commercial staff I know have moved to the region and were refused even a membership form, let alone an appointment to discuss on/off air volunteer roles.
That’s interesting Cranky. I didn’t think it was around that long ago either.
And judging by the appalling, distorted and overmodulated audio, plus some of the dreadful programming and announcing, they could really do with help from some experienced people.
ACMA gives the permanent licence a start date of 1 July 2002
With Channel 9 Darwin announcing the full-blown axing of it’s Darwin news bulletins (replacing them with the Queensland bulletin), will Territory FM still air that news as a simulcast from 6pm, or scrap taking TV news at that hour altogether?
The latest community station with transmission problems is Rhema 105.1 Wide Bay. Currently the audio is being drowned out but a loud buzz. Signal strength is still good.
RHEMA are at the Nikenbah Commercial FM site in Hervey Bay - I have not been to the site in years but Community FM there was badly in need of some technical help - there was also a another Community FM up near the TV translators at Ghost Hill who had difficulty getting technical support.
The only working broadcast tech’s in the area were the Seven Network tech and SCA tech in Maryborough - even they may have gone now.
Still airing this evening. Likely the station and Nine would need to mutually agree to opt out of the contract to stop the simulcast.
A few community stations in/around Sydney having issues at the moment:
- 2RSR 88.9 seems to be on significantly reduced power
- RBM 89.1 broadcasting an open carrier at the moment
- Wow FM 100.7 also still on significantly reduced power
That reminds me. 107.1 Highland FM Bowral
has a buzzing sound too, been like that for a little while now.
And @tvcl I noticed that too re 89 1, gave me a chance to hear ABC RN SW Slopes last night.
Nice! Pity the tropo is fairly ordinary with overnight rain and cooler air down here. That might change over the weekend though so keep an ear out for Braidwood FM.
All credit to Territory FM - great music this morning on Serene.
10:35 - Tiesto’s NYE VIP Remix feat Tate McRae
Not over yet (Perfecto edit) - Grace (So much more energy than the version Dance Hits play)
Heaven takes you home (feat. Connie Constance) - Swedish House Mafia
Take me away - 4 Strings
And here I was expecting something much more chillout and down-tempo and it’s got me pumping. Nice work. It’s Friday morning and this high energy mix is perfect heading into a long weekend.
