Community Radio

Tried to listen to 2HWK 89.9 (Pulse FM) whilst down in Sydney.

Signal seemed OK, but audio kept cutting in and out. It was basically unlistenable Anyone else having the same issue?

Send a message to ACMA then, sounds like nothing has changed in the Hawkesbury with community radio, seems like they don’t care about the quality of their transmission & aren’t interested in any community involvement/feedback about the station which goes against their license conditions, not a good start IMO.

A bit harsh! You come across as very helpful online and proactive.

Pettiness in community radio knows no bounds unfortunately.

102.7 seems 2-3 times stronger than previously now. Signal is quite clear in many parts of Brisbane with RDS including in car.

Last time i looked, 102.7 was only 500 watts… I’m sure it used to be 4kw years ago. Maybe it’s been bumped up?

Where were you listening from?

It depends…, do you remember “Judge Judy”, great TV show, as she says… “the truth is always somewhere in the middle”. Also as the B FM Bankstown Investigation found, Community Radio Stations should be wary of accepting members from outside their licence area.

I noticed this yesterday too, now by far the clearest of the Toowoomba FMs into Brisbane. I thought it may have been tropo enhancement yesterday but it’s still there, and the others are at usual levels. Previously it was almost unheard in most of Brisbane.

Yeah moved from the Uni to Mount Kynock onto the same site as to what 4WK 95.5 was on about 12-18months ago due to a stuffed antenna at the Uni, and then some other shit went down so instead of getting the antenna fixed Kynock became semi permanent
Now with the tower it and 95.5 scheduled to be knocked over to build a parking lot for a new shopping centre it has now been moved up the hill a little to another site which I don’t believe I am allowed to say which one yet. 4WK has other plans in the works

As for the coverage been a lot better anyone that knows Andrew Chapman knows he is quite good at engineering radio sites

I did find this odd

From the Sydney CBD… it seemed to be better yesterday than on Tuesday.

Not really, I’m a member of the Central Coast Community station that I do tech work for & I reside & work outside their licence area, there’s other members from outside the licence area who present programs & listen in who cause no problems what so ever, at one stage, one of those members were voted in to be on the management committee, at Coast FM we’ve found if there’s going to be trouble, it’s usually from a local who’s moved from one of the other community stations or not been accepted into one of the other stations.
I’m not 100% sure but think Coast FM Gosford may even have some members who live out of state or overseas, who stream online & want to support the station they like listening to?

I think the main issue with BFM at the time was that much of their programming was not aimed at the Bankstown community. I do listen to Coast FM from time-to-time and I don’t believe that would be an issue. I think Coast FM is an excellent example of how a community radio station should sound - all targeted at the Central Coast. An easy to listen to format during the day that would be attractive to sponsors, then after hours and weekends, a variety of specialist programs that allow members of the community to get to air.
88.9 Tamworth should really look closely at what Coast FM do and adopt it!

Yes agree, even Lake Macquarie FM broadcasts from outside their licence area.

Even I am technically outside 2BRW’s licence area!

What I am skeptical about are those who are aspirant HPON stations, or organisations trying to maneuverer their way into community radio.

At least 4DDB still sound like a community station and aren’t’ trying to ape a greatest hits commercial station though I think that would be very popular given the FM choice in the area.
