It really does seem like this is the way they are pivoting. I’m in two mins about it, I like it but I do also like the grand scale of news programming.
Though if it means they will make Fox look like old hat going to this model. Then might as well.
I still laugh at the fact that Fox has a “Fox News digital” division, which they even quote and use as a source on air. It sounds so 2003.

Could you cite an example of CNN’s “move into podcasting”? Because they don’t do anything of the sort at all on their television feed.
I’m referring to the recent pivot, such as Anderson Cooper anchoring from the newsroom with a podcast mic, loosened tie, no jacket and a far more conversational approach. This has been observed by many commentators as an attempt to tap into the podcast dynamic and audiences.
He’s is still anchoring from the newsroom, as of the most recent broadcast earlier today, in a style that is akin to a podcast, rather than on set, suit and tie presentation with package after package.
They’re seeking engagement and less formality. That’s what it’s about, not the mic. You don’t have to use the word podcast if you don’t like it.
Why are you being so dismissive ? Someone has made an observation and to be honest this type of newsroom setup for a show like AC360 is different - its not the stilted suits, set and traditional presentation from CNN… it does have a more laidback feel - more youthful and akin to a conversation style of broadcast - a podcast style.
I apologise if I came off as such. But I personally think that the move has been necessitated, if not accelerated, by the world’s biggest news event.
It does have that experimental/temporary feel to it.
Once that passes, we probably will see Anderson in front of a boring blue screen again.
Which is exactly what they should be doing. See what drives new viewers. If they find an uptick of this kind of presentation it may become permanent and more common across some programming.
I think I might be the only person who enjoyed seeing Jake Tapper do his show from his office. And I don’t even like Tapper that much!
What I think they need is to find a good balance between the looser, podcast-style stuff and the grander, more traditional newscasts. But loosen things up in general. I’ve loved the DC shows coming from the newsroom the last few weeks. They should stick with that, really lean into it. Let’s see the news being made behind the anchors.
And please ditch the spaceport look for News Central! It looks ridiculous. So dated.
News central spaceport look is horrendous. I mean for its time it would have been revolutionary but it just looks too StarTrek. Even the logo and title card are dated. It’s all a very weird clunky design.
In an unusual turn of events, The Lead is today being hosted not by Jake Tapper, but by none other than… Anderson Cooper!

Not at the moment, no. There was talk of it being rolled out internationally, so I’m sure it will happen at some point.
I’d be VERY surprised if they don’t carry it, tbh.
So from Monday 4th, Early Start at 5am ET is no more (again!), to be replaced by Headline Express (which is a bulletin currently made for CNN’s FAST channel):
If they continue to do it from Studio H in Atlanta (instead of the flash sets Early Start came from) then this will be an improvement, IMO. Also the 4am ET edition of CNNI Newsroom looks to be returning, which I think is another good move. (Previously it was American Pulse on CNN Domestic and a repeat of Amanpour on CNNI.)
Watching Headline Express. Don’t mind it. But it’s just a very different look for CNN.
