CNN

If CNN gets sold, as per rumours going round, then I suspect we will indeed see the two channels merge. I think they’re keeping them somewhat separate for now because CNNI is also CNN Max, and the cable companies hate it when they share too much content with domestic.

That I agree with. I don’t understand why they repeat AC360 and the likes through the night… no one watches them the first time! Would be good if they brought back CNN Today from London. It could be the overnight show for the US and a breakfast show for Europe.

isn’t it for their west coast viewers to be able to see it in primetime?

Yeah… but no one on the east coast watches those shows, never mind the west.

no one is watching? then it would get cancelled.

I think it’s more if you’re on the west coast and you think AC360 is appointment viewing, you’d tune in and watch it live but they also put it on replay which is a little weird as news very easily gets out of date even in 3 hours.

True, but also 8pm in NY is 5pm in LA.
I guess in this day and age might not be as relevant, but maybe this is just a hangover from a bygone era?

Yeah - it’s all about where viewers are in their daily routine and how they can watch it. Plus the west coast viewing probably mops up some east coast viewers who prefer to watch it late at night/channel surfing.

Wow. Will the last person who leaves CNN please turn off the lights… she’s an excellent anchor and will be missed. I think her best work was probably when she was paired up with Michael Holmes for CNN Today:

When they announced the new CNN domestic schedule a few weeks ago they said an announcement about the new international schedule would be in the next few days - but we haven’t heard anything.

It looks to me like perhaps a lot of these departures might be because these folk don’t have a place in the new line up.

Recently we’ve seen Anna Coren, Amara, Michael Holmes, Julia Chatterley all leave…

The other interesting fact is that before Jim Acosta left they offered him midnight- which is done by John Vause - so you’d have to think he is nervous too

It’s certainly a conundrum, isn’t it? I’m dying to know what they have up their sleeve. I wonder if they’re planning to move that night shift out of Atlanta? I wouldn’t be upset if they moved it to London. They have a fantastic set there that’s barely used, so more hours from there would be very welcome.

I think we might see what’s left of the international output move from the US to London and Abu Dhabi. And they’re building a studio in Doha, too.

Yep. Four presenters leaving in three months. And I’m sure there will be more to come. I imagine as people’s contracts end, they simply won’t be renewed. Gotta do more with less!

You would think Abu Dhabi would be one of the first markets to go concerning the high economic costs of that region.

You’d think so. But I think that Abu Dhabi set is their way of competing with Al Jazeera. I’m sure there’s some deal going on with the Emirati government, otherwise it probably would have been ditched years ago. Same with Doha, that’s apparently a deal with the Qatari government.

How is it more expensive than London?

I’m surprised they’ve given up on Hong Kong - the time difference in East Asia versus the United States means it makes a lot of sense to concentrate operations out of that region, if your goal is to run CNNI bulletins as overnight filler on the domestic feed. To that end, London as a hub is less efficient because timezones would mean having crews up to unreasonable hours.

If the HK political situation is the problem, move the bureau to Singapore. CNNI was always strongest when it broke away from American-heavy content and went for more of an internationalist, Al Jazeera-esque vibe. There’s so much money, particularly in the international business travel market, that I can’t see why they’re cannibalising CNNI at all.

I’d love to see CNN with a show out of Hong Kong again.

They should have one in AUS?

I’ve long thought CNNI should be completely separate to domestic, and both channels should be available worldwide. It will probably never happen… but it would be better than the current fudge.

They employ more than enough Australians so it’s certainly doable :squinting_face_with_tongue:

Amara’s last sign-off:

CNNI’s coverage of today’s German elections was especially pitiful, even by their standards… a 2 hour special presented not from Berlin, or even London… but from New York, where we were treated to Paula Newton sat in one of their now-trademark flash sets. Then after that it was back to a domestic simulcast and a discussion on Trump with Brian Stelter. The world’s news leader, everyone.

This seems to be the new international schedule (all times GMT so add/subtract to your local time as appropriate). Not much change apart from a repeat of Amanpour at 9am GMT and One World being expanded to two hours (yawn). Jim Sciutto is moving to Julia Chatterley’s old slot. Still no Situation Room (I know @melbviewer will be particularly disappointed to hear this). Load of rubbish by the looks of it.
