Climate, Weather and Emergencies

What’s the winter for SEQ? Seems to be May/Junr/July. August really started firing up in the temps I noted.

July and August are usually the coldest months.

They joke about an Edinburgh summer (or pick any other northern UK town) being a Tuesday afternoon in July - a Queensland winter isn’t a heap different unless you go up the range or inland.

You get cold nights in winter (and decently cold, like single digit minima) but apart from the odd cold snap it generally at least gets above 20 every day.

Had a call from West End just now - small hail with the sun out!
Fourth day in a row with a storm in Brisbane, albeit not covering as many suburbs. The last 2 have been late night storm fronts that have moved across much of SEQ and NNSW.

No general memes thread so I guess this goes here:

It’s a bit like that everywhere; ‘garden variety’ storms of gentler nature seem in short supply. Generally you’ll get one or two severe storms on the Southern Tablelands whenever storms are forecast, almost without exception.

We are between the icebox of Tassie and the furnace of Queensland, so we’re getting a bit of both camps. Frost is possible mid next week followed by 30C at the end of the week. No need to travel anywhere to experience Australia’s full spectrum of weather.

The one constant here is strong dry wind though which is a recipe for disaster if it continues through summer.

One place not to be right now is Darwin or Cairns… both with temps in the low 30s and dew point of around 25-26 degrees…. yuk.

Stock standard for the deep tropics at this time of year. There’s a reason why accommodation in Darwin is (relatively) dirt cheap in November!

Yes, Brisbane gets more than a few doses of equatorial humidity these days. Definitely the worst weather capital at the moment; the hailstorms have caused much more damage in SEQ than TC Fina did in Darwin. Hobart , Adelaide and Melbourne are all laughing.

“There are clear signs the tropical Pacific ocean and atmosphere are now coupled, meaning they are acting to reinforce and sustain the La Niña pattern,” the Bureau of Meteorology said.

“Atmospheric indicators, such as trade winds, pressure and cloud patterns over the equatorial central Pacific, also show consistent signs of La Niña.”

The last La Niña was in 2023.

What catches me is how quickly the humidity changes too. At about 4pm the local dewpoint was in the mid-teens - not low, but tolerable, and the temperature was dropping. So naive me threw all the doors open and let the place breathe.

Now only a few hours later, it’s back up to 23-24 and sweatier than a used gym sock, and I feel like a fool for sitting here in it.

Windy dot com gives you the dewpoint forecast if you use the meteogram; the Weatherzone 48 hour forecast is also fairly accurate. Given it’s been nothing but dry westerlies here I haven’t had much call to worry about the DP forecast as yet, but it’s vital for Brisbane and Sydney.

I could have declared it weeks ago. Melbourne has had a very wet and cold spring. It seems to be not ending and I expect this weather will move into the summer months.

A far cry from the last summer we had.

From memory Melbourne was still warm into May this year ?

Here in Yeppoon it’s been horrendous . i swear the last 3 years have been muggier than pre 2020 .

Here was the temp at midday

Looks like the warmest on record November (only goes back to 1994 )

My stepdad and i go walking in the morning and he comes back looking like he’s gone for a swim in the sea drenched in sweat . I don’t recall it being this bad since 2021 (La Nina also ).

Wonder if a cyclone will move down to NQ or CQ look how much warmer than average the sea is … wasn’t the case last year this time

The last two mornings have been -1.5 and 1C here. The -1.5 was possibly a record December low for Bungendore.

We are getting the cold and wind of Southern Aus but not much of the rain and bushfires will be a problem here very soon.

Probably even by the weekend when it’s forecast to hit 39 on Saturday here.

I’ve really enjoyed the weather here the last two days. Sunny but low to mid 20s and low humidity. Felt like a Tasmanian summer day. Sadly it’s about to end.

Reached for a blanket last night here, in December! That and no humidity during the day - if only it was like this all the time

How long have you been in SEQ for now? Do you find it easier to get used to the humidity the longer you are there, or do you find it harder to adjust to it as you get older? (I think I’m finding the latter here, even though I’ve been in the same town for 25 years now).

If only it was ,my air conditioners getting a rest this week,

Since I got older I tolerate the humidity less even though I’ve lived in Qld all my life, most of it in Brisbane
