Classification

Exactly Aurora. Disney are probably just getting frustrated because quite a lot of their kids movies get “PG” (even “Frozen” did) because their content exceeds “very mild impact”, often due to thematic material, even if it appears negligible or petty.

The CB work hard to establish the parameters and G, PG, M are each very different and depend on adult supervision to determine if their children fall within which based on their age or majority.

Hopefully this means networks will no longer split the movies into two for classification purposes from now on.

Channel Nine breaches classification rules

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) found Channel Nine breached the Commercial Television Industry Code of Practice after it split a screening of Pirates of the Caribbean, Dead Men Tell No Tales into two parts, each with a different classification.

The ACMA opened an investigation after Channel Nine broadcast the film in two parts, with the first part modified to suit the PG classification requirement for movies broadcast prior to 8.30 pm.

ACMA Chair Nerida O’Loughlin said film classification is intended to regulate broadcast content and assist viewers to make informed decisions about their viewing choices.

“Viewers—some who are children—would have started to watch a PG film, then halfway through been expected to choose between missing the end or watching M-rated material,” Ms O’Loughlin said.

“Networks are on notice that this approach is unacceptable and in breach of the Code.”

An ACMA investigation found that while the two parts were broadcast sequentially (part one between 7.00 pm and 8.35 pm and part two between 8.35 pm and 9.35 pm) the ACMA considers it constituted a single broadcast and the overall classification was M.

But the after 8:30pm M portion will have to be edited for PG.

I can’t believe timezone classifications still exist.

Or just push the movie back to 8.30pm so it can be shown under M rating.

The The Broadcasting Act has since changed and M rated movies can now be broadcast from 7:30pm and MA rated movies can now be broadcast from 8:30pm (in line with TV shows).

Nine bizarrely airing the edited “PG” version of A View To A Kill again tonight on 9Gem (for the record it started at 8:30pm, now “M” can air uncut from 7:30pm!)

Bond movies have been rating well the past week or two, many viewers will notice this tonight and might not be pleased, including completely removing the ‘mine massacre’ scene.

@Bort picked this up in a previous airing too. I’m guessing, as sometimes oddly happens, the network made this the master for some reason and no longer have an uncut version (this was more common 90s/2000s).

Does this not answer your own observation? Very common amongst the commercial networks.

Usually networks make two versions (one that’s edited for content and one that’s unedited), each with a different classification, each depending on timeslot restrictions. It’s very rare these days to see a network only ever play an edited version.

For fans, it looks silly, a “PG” at 11:15pm at night with significant scenes removed :expressionless:

I’ve had the movies on in the background, and was watching last night. They at least placed an ad break right where the scene begins, but they probably could’ve cut slightly earlier to remove the but where Zorin loads his ammo so it’s not so obvious that they’ve cut a scene.

Nice new profile picture, by the way

I like it when networks sometimes choose to schedule an ad break as a means of editing for content (classification), can look better.

Some of the (smaller) edits were silly though, like the climactic Golden Gate Bridge scene, removing Zorin hitting the water hard but still showing the initial fall (cutting to Roger Moore and Tanya Robert’s facial expression but still playing the end of Zorin’s ‘scream’ and ‘splash’) and removing the point of the blimp exploding with Zorin’s scientist and head of security fumbling the sticks of dynamite around, while still showing the rest of the exploding blimp and aftermath.

With so much cutting, perhaps they should be required to bring back the “Modified television version” qualifier?

Like in the US.

Noticed Nine left the Goldeneye massacre scene unedited tonight on 9Gem (where Xenia Onatopp and the General infiltrate the space research centre in Russia, suddenly and rather sadisticly machine gunning countless innocent workers with some bloody results). They still classified it “PG”.

Yet they completely removed that scene from A View To A Kill? Double standards

What do you think @Bort or others?

They haven’t exactly had a great run lately, last week found in breach by the ACMA.

NB/ Videos for reference:

Goldeneye scene at 1:33 (was left intact)

A View To A Kill scene (was removed)

And I reckon Goldeneye is another breach if someone complained. I don’t know how that scene can be PG

Or this scene

Saw a promo for the Amazon Prime stand up comedy series during Studio 10 this morning. I was surprised to hear Celia Pacquola saying “shit” in the promo at that time of the morning.

Is that level of swearing allowed during the day now?

Yes because Studio 10 is rated PG.
