Could be wrong but I thought it was also Ernie and Denise who did In Sydney Today.

Tony Gordon and Fiona MacDonald hosted In Brisbane Today.

that’s my recollection too. I suspect they used to tape the week of Melbourne shows over a day or two and then flew up to Sydney to tape a batch of shows up there.

Or the just taped both from the one studio in Melbourne?

Potentially, yes, though if they had Sydney-based guests appearing on In Sydney Today it would have been quite a lot of have to fly them down to Melbourne and back to Sydney for what could be a 5 or 10-minute segment. Would have been more efficient to just shift the two hosts up for a few days and not have to ferry a week’s worth of guests between cities.

Today’s TV: 1.5.1986, Melbourne

Australian drama at 7.30 across four channels, including SBS.

It was a different time…

I still seek out drama to watch in the early evening because of the habit formed watching it growing up in the '80s. Just not getting it on free to air these days.

@TelevisionAU Do you remember at what point HSV7 went to a one hour bulletin in the '80s? Mal Walden’s ratings must’ve been suffering with a 6.30pm start and both ATV and GTV starting at 6pm. ATN had been running one hour news for about eighteen months at this point.

Seven Today… wasn’t this HSV7s first attempt at news breakfast show?

Seven had tried Today shows as far back as 1958. But this version in the 70s was probably the first “national” (i.e. Syd-Melb) one.

Any additional information on this format?

Not much. Paul Bongiorno was apparently a presenter on the show at one stage but I don’t know in what capacity, I should get on Twitter and ask him :stuck_out_tongue:

There is this article from 1971, when Seven extended Sydney Today to include Melbourne, after Nine had axed its Today:

Seven had extensive coverage of the Grand Annual Steeplechase from Warrnambool in the 70s (nowadays it’s relegated to Sky Racing and racing.com).

That’s a good read. It actually went for a few years.

There seemed to be a need (back then) for a national breakfast program, but the stations just weren’t as committed in the long run or didn’t know how to turn a profit with them. Soon as cutbacks were needed, the breakfast shows were often first to go.

Argentina were the same too…
I remember watched Canal 13’s closedown in 1987 on YouTube and (at that time) they listed the entire schedule, and there was a program called Desayunos (Breakfast) at 7am at that time. The channel at that time opened at a bit later than 6:30am.

When major cutbacks were made to the Buenos Aires’ stations not long after (due to energy crisis), all (didn’t know if ATC was an exception) Buenos Aires’ stations cut the entire morning transmision timeslot and only began transmission from noon (or in some cases, 1PM).

Possibly something for @TelevisionAU, but I’ve seen Ballarat and Horsham races televised by BTV6 in guides and YouTube, but did they ever venture down to Warnambool for the May carnival?
