In Sydney on that day, the AFL match between the Sydney Swans and Carlton was shown live on 7TWO (I think), with a replay on the main channel following the wedding.
This was the Swans’ first Friday night regular season match since 2003, their exclusion from that timeslot primarily being to avoid a clash with the NRL.
It should also be noted that this came the day after the AFL announced a massive broadcast deal with Seven and Foxtel for the 2012-16 period, allowing Friday and Saturday night AFL matches to be shown live on 7mate in the northern markets instead of being delayed until late evening/early morning as was the case during the 2002-06 and 2007-11 broadcasting periods.
Since then, the Sydney Swans and Brisbane Lions have featured regularly on Friday nights (and the occasional Thursday night), though not very regularly like the Victorian clubs.
A huge TV schedule for Sunday night which was the first ratings week post-Easter non-ratings period. Channel 7 had V8 Supercars live from Barbegello with all day coverage. Over on 9, it was Logies night hosted by Shaune Bourne which was won by Karl Stefanovic and over on Channel 10 it was the premiere of the third season of Masterchef Australia.
Looks like DDQ shut down at midnight during the week, presumably to allow midnight test transmissions on Channel 0 (as TVQ was testing on 10 at the same time). Although we don’t get to see what the test programs were (TVQ listed theirs).
Then Friday (9 September) being the last day for Channel 10, and Saturday (10 September) being the first day for Channel 0.
They’d also changed the heading from “Toowoomba 10” (which they had previously) to just “Toowoomba”. Looking at later issues (from 1989) they still just left it as “Toowoomba”.
NEW10 has Ten News at 5.30pm, hoping to get an edge over Seven and Nine at 6pm, followed by one-hour episodes of Neighbours. Looking at the episode synopsis, “Ramsay Street is rendered speechless by the arrival of Harold’s son, David”.
Despite the double episodes to catch up to the eastern states, it looks like Perth was still literally a year behind the east coast with Neighbours as David Bishop is said to have first appeared on 11 May 1988 – David Bishop (Neighbours) - Wikipedia
But Home And Away at 7pm (as opposed to earlier timeslots in the eastern states) was the winner in Perth, it was often the city’s top rating show around that time.
Also interesting that 10 in Perth were showing the mid week rugby league ‘Panasonic Cup’ games, albeit at 12.30am.. wonder if MEL or ADL were screening that in 1989.
I had an Aunt who lived in Tamworth at the time, she was not happy about losing those Nine/Ten programs, and she didn’t like that Prime was showing more sport than 9-8 did.
I wonder how much reminding viewers had to have at DDQ’s end when the switch happened. We’ve seen the guides saying TVQ goes to 0 to 10 - I wonder if Toowoomba’s guides said the same.
