Interestingly WIN had an American action/drama show Hardcastle and McCormick in the prime 7.30pm slot. They aired 60 Minutes on Mondays at 8.30pm in those days.

This one’s a very long post, but since I collaborated a few different papers for the same day’s TV listings I think it’s worth it.

I daresay the program guide listed in Canberra Times may have been for AMV4 and the one listed in the Sun Herald was for RVN2 (or vice versa) - at times in Sydney Morning Herald (Monday edition) they would list the variations for both channels.

Below is a link to a Victorian TV listing as featured on television.com.au for Sunday 13 November 1988, On that day Fosters Australian Formula One Grand Prix and 60 Minutes 10th Anniversary. Note that AMV4 has Sunday and Business Sunday listed as a lead in (with no Sportsworld - obviously because of the Motor Racing, and The World Tomorrow not screening)

That is interesting about WIN airing the Sunday rugby league Match Of The Day after the Sunday night movie. I always thought NBN and RVN were the only ones in NSW that regularly did that, with everyone else showing it after the evening news (I also thought AMV wouldn’t have shown it at all, but it’s listed as the same time as RVN).

I think WIN did that for 2 reasons

  1. It was early in the season
  2. It had already been announced that Television aggregation would take place and at that time it was all but decided that WIN would carry Nine affiliation. Also There was the motor racing from Calder Park on in the mid-late afternoon slot. Also note that Channel 7 had it screening from 2pm til 6pm and it looks like the regionals left the coverage at 5:00pm. I know a lot of regional networks did exit sporting coverage they screened early where they could (eg Bathurst 1000 etc), but usually it was only half hour early unless they had to exit that coverage for another sporting coverage, special event or the evening news.

The three things that surprised me the first two relate to Mid-State Television - the first was that Business Week was listed for Mid-State Television - I always thought up until the end of 1988 that Mid-State Television carried Business Sunday on Sundays, also on Mid-State Television I am pretty sure A Time To Live (a locally produced religious program) aired after Sportsworld on Sunday afternoons until the end of 1988 (but that said it could have been on at a “special time” due to the Motor Racing). I was also surprised about AMV4 airing Rugby League as well - but then it was screened in a late timeslot.

Two notes on SBS listings from the day:
Cantonese News was provided by Hong Kong’s Asia Television. It was a trimmed down version of the 6pm news from previous night, minus world news and sport items. SBS switched the news supplier from ATV to TVB in 2009
Nightly Business Report continued to air on SBS for another decade or so, can’t remember which year it was dropped from the Worldwatch line-up. NBR was produced from Miami (WPBT-TV) at the time, and was part of PBS’s national schedule until 2011 when the public broadcaster dropped the show and cut all funding. The program continued until March 1, 2013, and three days later it was picked up by CNBC where it has been ever since.

here for those cooking show buffs

Never knew Barney & Friends once aired on Ten. I only ever remember it airing on Nine.

Good old days with no afternoon news until Ten’s bulletin at 5pm. Back when it really was first at five.

I think Seven’s success with Better Homes And Gardens prompted this one from Ten and Family Circle magazine. Hosted by Penny Cook and Julia Zaetta (Editor of Family Circle).

IIRC it was live to air.

  • No “Hey Hey It’s Saturday Night” on CTC7, WIN4 and RVN2.
  • WIN4 takes the full three hours of “Sounds” while CTC7 joins it at 10am for the last two hours.
  • RVN2 had its own music video show “Videorock” (not sure if it was hosted from Wagga or Albury).
  • SBS’s broadcast day had programmes from Czechoslovakia, Mexico, Poland, Italy, Greece and Portugal.
  • The ABC’s Saturday Night Movie was “Jedda” from 1955.
  • ABC had live coverage of the rugby league that day.
  • WIN4 had its own local kids show “Kids News”, as well as movies running all night.
