Which regional network aired Video Hits first?

Just wondering was 10Capital the first regional network to pick up Video Hits or did DDQ/RTQ beat it? or did some other channel elsewhere beat those i have listed?

yeah but I think they wanted it to fail. Conspiracy theory: ATN had two dramas in production (Sons And Daughters and A Country Practice) and I reckon it dreaded the thought of a soap from Melbourne potentially knocking one of them off, as to have three soaps was potentially not sustainable, so they knocked it down before it had a chance and convinced the Sevens in Brisbane and Adelaide to vote it out as well.

I remember reading somewhere that one of the reasons network execs gave the go ahead to Neighbours, besides desperately needing something competitive for the 6pm slot, was because all that studio space in Melbourne was going to waste after the demise of Cop Shop saw the end of drama production at HSV.

  • School holidays, therefore lots of children’s programmes during the day and regional stations extended their programming by starting earlier to accommodate.
  • Bret Maverick a western series starring James Garner, in its one and only season on ATV10, it was western night on Ten with two films in that genre following.
  • Seven would have had the Columbia/Screen Gems (now Sony) output deal then with Bewitched, the Flying Nun, I Dream of Jeannie and the movie “Cromwell” (a Columbia picture). Nine had Universal (the Wiz) and Ten had Warner Bros and United Artists (now part of MGM).
  • America’s Cup updates on both metro and regional stations
  • Stock Market Report was a common programme amongst regionals.

Today’s TV: 16.9.1996, Melbourne.

The Nine Network celebrates 40 years of television, although Seven had jumped the gun by having its own 40th anniversary special some months earlier, hosted by Garry McDonald and Magda Szubanski. And even Channel 10 had its own special, 40 Fun Years, even though Ten itself was far from 40 years old!

I remember the 1985 episodes of Neighbours included a caption at the end stating “Produced in the studios of Flinders Productions”. Who or what were Flinders Productions - were they linked to Grundys or HSV? From 1986 the show was of course produced at the ATV10 studios at Nunawading, now Global Studios, and expanded within the complex due to the demise of Prisoner.

The Seoul Olympics were unusual with the opening ceremony held in mid morning to suit American TV viewers, following by competition in the afternoon and at night. It’s also the first (and only) time the Olympics clash with the VFL/AFL Grand Final.

I remember reading an interview with Ken Sutcliffe a few years back where he recalled co-hosting an edition of Wide World of Sports which aired against both the Olympics and the Grand Final (apparently, one of their main features that day was the World Log Rolling Championships or something like that)

Of course, if something like this were to happen now, Nine would scrap WWOS for the day and air a C-grade movie in its place.

Would I be right in saying, Nine’s first national morning news service was launched at this time? 1982?

Part from 11AM, I haven’t seen any morning news bulletins listed prior to 1982.
