ABC wins worldā€™s top childrenā€™s TV awards

The ABC has won two awards at the worldā€™s largest competition for outstanding childrenā€™s television for the Australian series Hardball and The Unlisted.

The ABC ME programs were the only Australian winners of the prestigious Prix Jeunesse International Awards, which were chosen from a field of 400 childrenā€™s programs from 59 countries.

Hardball, which tells the story of fish-out-of-water Mikey and his goal to become the sweetest-bestest-acest hardball champ in Western Sydney, won the Prix Jeunesse for the worldā€™s best childrenā€™s fiction program for 7-10-year-olds. The comedy series, produced by Northern Pictures for the ABC, was also recognised in the international jury section of the biannual awards, which were voted on by 500 childrenā€™s television experts from around the world.

Drama series The Unlisted, about identical teenage twins trying to stop a global conspiracy against children, won the international youth jury prize for the worldā€™s best fiction program for 11-15-year-olds. The series, produced by Aquarius Films for the ABC, was also the runner-up for the main trophy in that category.

ABC Childrenā€™s series Bluey and Little J and Big Cuz were also nominated for Prix Jeunesse awards, which were announced during a virtual ceremony from Munich on 11 June.

ABC Head of Childrenā€™s Production Libbie Doherty said the award wins showed how Australia is making its mark across the world for outstanding childrenā€™s programs. ā€œPrix Jeunesse celebrates excellence, creative innovation and the wonderment of childhood,ā€ she said.

ā€œ The Unlisted and Hardball represent the best of Australian childrenā€™s content creation. Congratulations to all the cast, crew and creatives who brought their ā€˜A Gameā€™ to these productions. To stand alongside the best in the world is a great honour and both of these productions have rightly earned their place on that international stage.ā€

The biannual Prix Jeunesse Awards celebrate high-quality and innovative programming and excellence in television worldwide. The ABC was also a winner in the 2018 Prix Jeunesse, with ABC MEā€™s First Day winning the gender equity prize and What Itā€™s Like to Experience A Disability taking home an international youth jury award. In 2016, ABC series Little Lunch won the award for best fiction program in the 7-10-year-old category.

ABC kids shows Hardball and Peppa Pig have both been honoured at the Banff Rockie Awards.

Northern Pictures head of factual Karina Holden has given Inside Film an update on season 3 of News of the Wild, a wildlife-focused show for children on 7TWO.

The team is in the final weeks of (post-production), which is no small feat considering this season was 80 episodes. News of the Wild is a wildlife-focused entertainment show aimed at 7-to-12-year-olds, mixing both comedy and factual. Northern Pictures has been delivering content to the Seven Network for five years straight since Catherine Nebauer launched our kids division and this consistency has been incredibly important for the company. With everything now in limbo as the quotas are being reviewed and possibly being removed altogether for 2021, we are obviously hoping weā€™ll see a return to the previous regime.

Has a date been given for when Toasted TV wraps up?

Already has.

Any word on when the final episode is supposed to air though? Surely thereā€™ll be some form of farewell to viewers?

All they said was that the show was wrapping up in mid-August.

As I understand it, they only worked a week ahead of broadcast - so their ship has sailed already.

Mustā€™ve gotten a few extra eps produced then

So thankfully, Toasted TV will at least manage to reach the milestone of being on-air for a full 15 years on Saturday.

What do you think the chances are of Toasted TV remaining on-air until the launch of 10 Shake (when the other kids shows will move to the new channel)?

Either way, I hope to catch the final episode(s) when they do air to see if thereā€™s a proper farewell to viewers or just a quick ā€œNo more Toasted TV, bye!ā€ to close the very last segment.
