Children's television

ABC has acquired Emerald, the spin-off from Isadora Moon franchise. The original Isadora Moon series is streaming now on iView.

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but when 10 of all our networks is supplying the most children’s programming outside preschool, you’ve got problems.

ABC should really have channels for all ages IMO.

It is sad times for locally made children’s television, and to come.

Although ABC is making programs, it’s not as much as they used to. 10 has made very few shows in recent years, although airing at obscure slots with zero promotion. Seven and Nine? Well, pretty much nothing.

10 still make shows outside preschool, and they do run a teen/tween channel in Nickelodeon with not half-bad shows (Spongebob, Fairly OddParents come to mind)

Really could have done with the Bluey revenue, oh well.

It’s a shame they got rid of ABC3/ABC ME as many people including me grew up watching that channel and it was awesome. The kids of now wouldn’t know what they’ve missed out on.

Although ABC3’s proposed format was never actually realized by any stretch either as the whole 100% local production thing fell victim to cheap international co-productions or imported series.

The good thing about ABC3/ABC ME is that it had a very decent variety of kids shows that were local and international to show. Now with that gone, they’re getting most of their programming cheap from an American cable channel to fill up the timeslot and not as much Australian content to show.

Yes, but the Rudd government’s initial commitment was to have ABC3 as an entirely local children’s service, which it never actually became; at best, it was ABC’s version of CBBC, if that.

TBH… from memory it was about 70% local content throughout the day. Not a bad effort.
