She shouldn’t taint her career by getting involved with that shambles.
I don’t see the issue? Shows like Studio 10, The Project, The Chase etc use a much smaller pool of supporting cast members and it’s not a big deal. There’s actually an advantage in having some semi-regular and recognisable celebs on the show. I would have no issue seeing some of those like Tommy and Courtney appearing semi-regularly as they are very entertaining, rather than throwing quantity of names on there for the sake of it.
Good to see this show gaining a teeny bit of momentum in ratings this week. The celebs promoting it elsewhere in the media must be giving it some more exposure. I think it’s a great entertaining show that deserves to do better.
Shows like Blankety Blanks (Match Game), Celebrity Squares and The Celebrity Game used the same celebrities over and over again. In fact, viewers tuned in more when their favourites featured.
But they were real celebrities.
Really?
Many of them were best known for these game shows they appeared in.
Never watched those shows. Who were some of the celebrities that featured?
Ugly Dave Gray and Joy Chambers are real celebrities.
What were they known for before Celebrity Squares and Celebrity Game?
Joy Chambers was Reg Grundy’s wife and was an actress. Ugly Dave Gray was a comedian, did the club circuit iirc. Both were regulars on Blankety Blanks … but their stardom wasn’t much different to the current crop of game show regulars.
That’s what I’m saying. people have this idolised view of what celebrities were back then. I agree they were the same as the calibre we are seeing on Celebrity Name Game.
Joy Chambers had minor acting roles before she was on The Celebrity Game in 1976. She was in The Restless Years in 1979, The Young Doctors 1981 and Neighbours after 1985. Maybe her claim to fame was Reg Grundy’s wife.
I’m not old enough to remember whether Ugly Dave Gray was a celebrity just from being on the comedy circuit. But I do know he became a big name when he was on Celebrity Squares which led to his role on The Young Doctors and then a stellar effort on Blankety Blanks.
I disagree with that. The current crop of “celebrities” seem to be from a stand up comedy background, wacky FM breakfast radio show, ex sports stars or be known for hosting news and morning shows.
The celebrities that appeared in shows like Blankety Blanks and Celebrity Squares around 40-50 years ago were far more versatile and more likely to have come from a theatre and acting background. The likes of Noel Ferrier, Stuart Wagstaff and Ugly Dave Gray were true raconteurs- they were known for their ability to tell a good story in an entertaining way. They were familiar to Australian viewers because they had been seen for years on the various variety television shows singing, dancing and spinning a good yarn. They were true, accomplished entertainers.
I don’t disagree with those mentioned. But times change. There are no variety shows these days.
However, they had plenty of average D list celebrities on those shows too.
Yep. I’m well aware times have changed. You keep reminding me. Our media sector is far more diverse than it once was and it’s easy to ignore “celebrities” if they don’t appear in your sphere of interests. However, the likelihood of knowing a D list celebrity in the 1970s was far greater because there weren’t that many outlets from which these people could gain exposure. Even as a child I was aware of the likes of Carole Raye, Barry Creighton, Peggy Topano, Joanna Lockwood and Joe Hasham even if I wasn’t allowed to watch the naughty shows they appeared in because they also appeared on daytime television, radio and magazines.
