Would that have been because CBSN is shown in Australia on (then) All Access?
Anthony Mason out, former NFL player and sports commentator Nate Burleson in.
I reckon they should’ve moved Dokoupil off. He’s been very bland ever since joining CBS This Morning but he’s better as a reporter.
I can only imagine this is a move to skew ‘younger’ and copy GMA but really the best part of this show is that it (used to) focus on hard news and the rest without the gimmicks. What a shame.
Susan Zirinsky has not been productive in her role at all. Doing unnecessary moves for the 3rd rate news network in America and radically changing what viewers were accustomed and comfortable with. Only good move was moving O’Donnell to Evening News but even then the ratings haven’t really moved up.
Norah is great but I feel she lacks the authority required for the CBS Evening News. I would’ve liked her to stay on with Gayle and Anthony on CTM.
Scott Pelley really should’ve been kept on at Evening News. What a waste that was.
I like Norah as a presenter and prefer her over Scott but to be fair to him he was unfairly shafted. His style became colder as his tenure continued, probably due to his ‘hard news’ focus but it felt very old-fashioned whereas Norah’s bulletin feels a lot more dynamic these days.
Feels like there has been too many changes on CTM in the last few years, with Gayle the only real mainstay of the program which has really been built around her the last few years.
Closer to home seems 10 can’t keep up with these changes, with this tile image and description still appearing online which dates back to early 2019.
Hosts Gayle King, Norah O’Donnell and John Dickerson set out to redefine CBS’ morning landscape with their lively and original reporting on international news…

CBS Mornings is such a generic and meaningless name. I get that they want it to sound consistent across the board but there was nothing wrong with CBS This Morning. CBS Mornings can mean literally anything.
Taking a leaf out of the Sunday Morning opening theme seems bizarre too considering this show is leaning more and more towards a lighter and puffier format compared to the hard news/old school style Sunday Morning does.
I don’t like the new name at all and they are abandoning their niche they carved out with the hard news no fluff theme despite their assurances it won’t change. How are you supposed to differentiate yourself when your just like your competitors. Yes the ratings weren’t moving but surely this will just bring them back to the ghastly “The Early Show” era.
A return to The Early Show may not be the worst thing. It was arguably more successful than CTM, though that’s a testament to viewing habits today vs 10-15 years ago.
It will be interesting to see where this goes… Likely down.
They have carved out a good niche in the market by offering proper news, obviously not enough for the network so its back to the Today/GMA imitation game. They will lose a lot of their existing audience who seek it out for what it is.
Oh great, another studio made up purely of video walls. Whatever happened to good physical set design?
On another note, the EP has said the eye opener will remain:
Not sure if abandoning the CBS This Morning name, and their harder news focus is a great idea.
Sure they’re still running #3, but wouldn’t their demos skew towards more affluent viewers?
That’s not exactly how it works. Wealthier, affluent viewers don’t necessarily choose news based on intellect. I’d be willing to bet more of them watch the historical mainstays GMA, Today or Fox & Friends. CBS runs a distant third in every demographic including the money demographic that matters most to advertisers.
I don’t see the niche side of things that this forum seems to accentuate.
Any morning show strikes a balance between hard and soft. CTM has always kept more of the balance towards the hard news side with most of the 7am hour and the A-block of 8am - more than what we can say of the others where they really let loose after 7:30. The soft stuff has always been different from the others, too. Not cooking segments that push the viewer to try it, but profiles of chef and cuisines.
If they start doing street segments and weekday concerts, then I’ll be worried.
The whole thing looks seems very generic now, not a fan of the simplified name.
Don’t like the new theme either, it’s not right for a weekday show.
Set is okay, a little fresher than their current one which wasn’t bad.
Definitely see why they want to link to Sunday Morning, the name change doesn’t really bother me. They’re trying to build a 7 day brand which is a good idea.
I’ve always felt like it was disingenuous to suggest the show as a hard news alternative to the competition because the content can be just as trite as the others just without the flashiness and gimmicks. To me it’s always been a more formal talk show, hardly a straight news program. They interview artists, actors and chefs just like the others. They’re inching closer to the others, most notably GMA, with the addition of a former football player who has no news background.
CNN’s New Day or local morning competition (which often bests CBS) would be more akin to hard news.
