Adelaide’s Carols by Candlelight returns to Elder Park in 2022

The much loved SeaLink Carols by Candlelight event will once again return to Adelaide’s Elder Park on Sunday 11 December 2022 with a free kids carnival during the day before a star-studded evening concert by the River Torrens.

Sealink Carols by Candlelight provides a wonderful opportunity to get together with your nearest and dearest, light your candles and sing along to some of your favourite Christmas songs. It’s one of the most exciting times of the year, as families get out their rugs and picnic baskets to be part of one of our city’s great traditions.

Carols by Candlelight is Australia’s second-oldest Christmas concert, presented to Adelaide residents and television audiences since 1944 when an estimated one in 10 citizens attended the first event. The traditional Elder Park concert now attracts more than 25,000 people annually and raises much-needed funds for South Australian charitable causes.

TV Broadcast

Sealink Carols by Candlelight will be broadcast on 7TWO Adelaide at 7.30pm on Monday 12 December, and nationally on Channel 7 on Sunday 25 December, while streaming on 7Plus will be available from Monday 12 December for 30 days

Performers for this year’s event are Vika and Linda Bull with Gospo Collective, Samantha Jade, Amber Lawrence, Lucy Durack, Taylor Henderson, Irish tenor Tommy Fleming and The Voice 2022 grand finalist Thando Sikwila. The popular children’s segment will be headlined by Carols specialists Jay Laga’aia and Stefanie Cacamo and feature performers from Dancers by Donna. For the all-important musical component, carollers can expect beautiful performances from the Adelaide Concert Orchestra and vocal assistance from choirs Adelaide Philharmonia Chorus and Young Adelaide Voices.

Samantha Jade will also appear at Carols in the Domain in Sydney on December 17.

National Replay will be at 11:30am on Christmas Day

Ahead of last night’s event, last Sunday 7News Adelaide’s flashback segment did a report on the Carols, featuring Rosanna Mangiarelli, who has been one of the hosts for the past 20 years, and counting.

An extended interview with Rosanna can be seen here:

Quite a number of microphone problems last night, with the event wrapping up I’d say about 40 minutes late.

The giant ‘80 YEARS’ was a nice touch for the finale:

The presenters last night said Adelaide’s carols would be airing nationally. I thought they meant the Christmas Day replay but it does appear to be scheduled tonight for 7pm on 7two in Brisbane, for instance.

EDIT: Confirmed to be national:

Fair few people weren’t happy with how late it was - fireworks couldn’t run for long apparently (only 2 minutes) due to sound laws because of the lengthy delays, families having to navigate through the city late at night with all the nightlife. Some people said they heard more ads than actual songs because of the microphone issues, and many had to leave early so they didn’t miss the last bus or train for the night.

I’m guessing we won’t see any of the technical issues in tonight’s broadcast

I had noticed that Adelaide Metro had not organised extra trams and buses to run after the event. Was it because it attracted a small crowd?

More like 1.5 minutes! Typically the fireworks continue for several minutes past where the broadcast ends but last night it was a mere 6 seconds (I checked my video).

And yes, it did seem like the ads last night ran longer than they used to, but having said that it has been several years since I last attended. Technical issues aside, it’d be nice if they could shorten the length of the in-person ad spots - they would still end up with what they need for the broadcast.

Most likely - they would’ve also had to find quite a few extra bus drivers who would be available if they operated extra services given three train lines weren’t running due to level crossing upgrades.

Indeed - though maybe still have one or two extended spots for those who need to go to the toilet, etc, but apart from that - should be a minute to reset for next performance.

Some acts need more setup or tear down time than others, so that might just fall into place. Example for TV and what happens in the break:

Thanks - do they still do retake’s of performances that went wrong?

Yes. For instance, Rachael Beck had to restart one of her performances as we couldn’t hear her (just the choir and orchestra).
