The overlap between the Katoomba/Penrith and Sydney licence areas is not enough to trigger the ownership restrictions but the overlap between the Ipswich and Brisbane licence areas is enough to prevent ARN from having two Brisbane licences and River 949.

Actually, Katoomba RA1 has a 77% overlap with Sydney RA1 & 88% overlap with Western Suburbs Sydney RA1, which is well above the 30% threshold to trigger the ownership restrictions.

See: https://www.acma.gov.au/section-30-schedule-licence-area

Despite that, in 1997, through a loophole, the then ABA allowed ARN to acquire 96.1, as the company would own stations across three separate licence areas: Sydney RA1 (106.5), Western Suburbs Sydney RA1 (2UUS) & Katoomba RA1 (96.1).

The difference with the SEQ situation is that ARN owned two stations in Brisbane RA1 (97.3 & 4KQ), which unlike between Sydney RA1 & Western Suburbs Sydney RA1, is a single licence area.

I feel a bit dumb founded but it all to be honest, I had an interview with ARN about a job at the then unknown new radio station, and they told me that this station would be on the forefront of youth culture, big on tik tok, exclusive content, a unique website to invite young people to view the latest news and content.

None of which I have seen, and a lot of ideas I put forward to them seems to have fallen on deaf ears.
In the end they didn’t hire me anyways, apparently they had someone better.

I’m not saying I know all and there is a long way for me to go, but so many of the issues that have happened so far would never have happened if I was involved.

Welcome to the world of radio, they won’t listen, they want you to listen to them :man_shrugging:

If you are allowed to say, what would you have done differently??

Would you have gone with the format they have taken?

Build the station on the cutting edge of AUS Hip-Hop, with a completely reformatted playlist from Day 1.

Program it with a bigger focus on the Hip-Hop that K-Sara would play but have that across the day with a few real US Hip-Hop / UK Grime tracks and less poppy Hip-Hop, and drop the censorship altogether.

Program the day with less “Chat Shows” and more music focused shows with Djs mixing the tunes together.

For Eg, Weekdays;
6-9: Breakfast (10min Urban Dj Mix at 8)
9-12: Mornings (Requests and Music Focus)
12-1: Dj Mix of what’s trending right now
1-3: Afternoons (Music Focused)
3-4: What’s hot on Tik-Tok music wise
4-7: Drive with lighter talk and news/gossip
7-10: CADA 30 with K-Sara (What’s hot in the Music scene and on tik-tok right now)
10-12: Late Nights (Underground HipHop / UK Grime)
12-6: Non-Stop CADA

Weekends could have a few niche shows with Saturday nights feature a live Hip-Hop Mix show with requests.

Get outdoors with some advertising on the streets around Penrith/St Marys and have a couple of billboards up around that area as well

Get presenters out on Tik-Tok to create casual content, not heavily produced content they have been pushing out to social media as it will come across a disingenuous to young people. (Look at any successful brand on Tik-Tok).

Looking at Tiktok Trending on iHeart, makes sense why Cada is the way it is. The log has Dance Monkey by Tones & I on it today which was “Trending” on Tiktok in 2019-very early 2020.

Same energy as Cada playing a 2016 Flume song today instead of any of his current (popular) songs.

For some reason, Cada is currently going through the TikTok Trending station here in Perth, even after a re-scan - no dedicated Cada channel showing up on my station list

2DAY FM took them to court over it back in the late 90s or early 00s, and 2DAY lost that case sensationally

I’m getting CADA as a normal DAB+ station after a rescan here in Perth.

Even if you just stick to a good US Hip-Hop playlist it can still sound good, I currently run a dedicated US Hip-Hop format weekdays 10-3 on Starter FM, and I think it sounds quite good.

Has CADA replaced TikTok Trending? Or does Perth now have 96FM 80s, CADA and TikTok Trending?

Yeah looks like it. Also seems to run on WA time, and has no station text.

Surprised they replaced TikTok, as I assume it was a sponsored station TikTok paid for.

That’s so annoying. They should’ve replaced 96FM 80s. It gives nothing considering 96FM is mainly 80s anyway.

Playing Eminem this afternoon and describing it as “old school”.

Well I mean… some of Eminem’s songs are now over 20 years old now… so they’re technically not wrong

The Edge were so proud of not playing any musuc that was more than 5 years old but Cada is embracing “throwbacks” and “old school” music which were terms you only ever heard on Nova, KIIS and 2Day.

Maybe from the initial feedback from their social media they are not going to get the youth market that easily. So they will try skewing older and play anything that is hip hop / RnB even if that means throwing back to the 90’s.

The music still conflicts with the branding, is Cada a purely Hip Hop Station??? They seem to play quite a bit of EDM and some pop songs.
Maybe the positioner should just be Never Miss a Beat, which would’ve give them more flexibility with their playlist.

The dirty dozen today had the curse word censored. Maybe ARN read our comments.

Those Cada ads we are creating a movement must go down as the most annoying ad ever to be heard on radio. Are they trying to be woke like Triple J??
The frequency and the wankiness of the message is excruciating to listen to. It is an instant channel changer for me every time.
People are commenting on social media about how bad it is too.

The station is woeful…
I was open to the idea of hearing ‘radio done differently’, BUT this just isn’t it.

The music format is disgustingly messy, the new talent is unbearable to listen to and the imaging is embarrassing. Have they spent all their time creating sizzle reels for socials, and NO TIME on the basics of radio broadcasting?

They’ve absolutely destroyed The Edge, after years of hard work made it comparable to the big metro stations in Sydney. It WAS well and truly, punching above it’s weight and just needed some more TLC from ARN management.

I’m all for developing NEW announcers & trialling new shows, but wiping the roster of seasoned radio pros like Mike E & Emma/Nat Penfold, seems like a mistake and you can HEAR that the station is seriously lacking ANYBODY who has a clue what they’re doing.

I hope for their sake, management is identifying the obvious problems instead of living in dream land and thinking/believing that the launch was a success. Punters CLEARLY aren’t happy and they know, comments are being deleted like crazy on socials.

Now it’s Cada for me too - must’ve been an overnight change
