Sad Outcome
Gore Hill TV tower has be saved. It’s the only back up site to Artarmon and a city the size of Sydney needs an alternate site for emergencies, maintenance etc. Also hosts Smooth and Nova.
Edit: Just realised article was about Ripponlea, not Gore Hill.
The Ripponlea tower was an STL and microwave links tower, not a transmitter tower for home viewers as such.
It ceased being an STL around the time ABC Victoria Presentation/Continuity moved to Southbank in the early 2000’s. It was last used for microwave links when the final Shaun Micallef Mad As Hell program was recorded in 2017, the last studio program recorded in the legendary Studio 31. The live microwave studio feed was sent to Sydney for ABC Legal preview and Network Classification purposes. DVN lines were ripped out of there several years earlier.
The now property developers are possibly keeping the tower to rent out to mobile phone carriers if they are not already?
Not sure why the author of that TV Tonight story said that Kath and Kim was made at Ripponlea. AFAIK it was all done on location. Apart from one ep when they met Michael Buble and they used a Ripponlea studio. There were many other far more important things shot there than In Gordon Street Tonight. Very selective list of programs, and nothing from the early days.
Yes, I winced when I read that too about Kath & Kim. Post was definitely done at Ripponlea.
Plenty of broadcast towers atop the San Bruno Mountains south of San Francisco.
Taken on my flight today from SFO to LAX (and shortly to Sydney).
I was horrified when I saw that reflected power figure too. I calculated the same SWR figure as above.
@Casper you really should do something about that very high SWR asap.
Like @RFBurns I’m surprised the transmitter isn’t shutting down or worse.
@RFBurns is providing you with very good advice.
TX looks like a RFE DS Series Medium Power 2kW-3kW FM Transmitter.
The vents on the FM TX need a good clean soon, to prevent overheating.
It’s possible the production unit was based there.
A hot air balloon hit a KKOB radio tower sometime after 9 a.m. at 10511 Second Street NW. It was able to keep flying and no one was injured .
Very sad indeed.
A sneaky shot of the base of the tower from inside:
I wonder how they’ll keep it, given it’s attached to a soon to-be-demolished roof? Unless the legs go all the way to the ground, but I don’t recall seeing them anywhere…
It seems SCA has leased out part of their building in Coffs Harbour. The old NRTV main studio is being used by Coffs Karate as a dojo. Good to see old facilities being repurposed.

Meanwhile, TCN-9 is apparently being used for the Hunger Games.
Literally rented out, still with all the lighting set up
The former WIN studios in Mt Gambier are up for sale. There’s some good pics on inside in the listing.
Third time it’s been on sale - was sold in at the end of 2021, however, appeared on the market again earlier this year - either the new owners weren’t satisfied, or they didn’t find a buyer earlier this year.
