Bluey

This issue has been discussed here in the past. I think the ABC has to cop some of the blame for not seeing the long-term potential of the franchise.

‘I hope Bunnings don’t come after me’: Bluey creator’s Hammerbarn fear

Bluey creator Joe Brumm has revealed he feared hardware giant Bunnings might sue him when he wrote the show’s now-iconic “Hammerbarn” episode.

Brumm, speaking at the Reset conference in Sydney yesterday, told the story of Bluey’s journey from a simple line-drawing on a pad of paper to the most-streamed show in the US in 2024.

“When I wrote the Hammerbarn episode, which is my version of Bunnings, I just remember shitting myself ‘I’m gonna get sued’,” he said. “Like, ‘I hope Bunnings don’t come after me.’”

Far from suing, Bunnings saw the opportunity when approached by BBC Studios Director of Brands Kate O’Connor, who handled all Bluey’s marketing.

“She contacted a lot of the regional managers at Bunnings and it wasn’t getting anywhere. Eventually she went to the CEO,” he said. “It was a long time in the planning.”

The Bluey movie, due to be released in 2027, is now Brumm’s main focus following his decision to stop working on the show after the third series finale last year.

Speaking at Reset, Brumm said the Bluey movie would be made with 3D computer modelling, as opposed to the 2D TV series. He was tight-lipped about any plot points.

Uï»żS President Donald Trump’s planned movie tariffs have been criticised by Australia’s ambassador to Washington who told a gathering of business leaders he opposed a “tax on Bluey”.

“I don’t think we want to see a tax on Bluey,” the former prime minister said.

Bluey is Australian made still isn’t it? It’s not an American production made outside of the US.

So far it has been announced that Trump is planning a 100% tariff on movies “produced in foreign lands”. That’s by either American or foreign producers. If that is extended to television and streaming, then that affects Bluey and other content sold to America.

Each episode features a Bluey song and takes place in a different location within Bluey’s World, with young fans joining in the fun.

The first episode, released yesterday (May 15), features the Bluey theme song. A new episode comes out every Thursday. The songs which will feature in the series are A Message from the Fairies from Bluey: The Album, Bluey Theme Tune (Dance Remix) from Dance Mode, Lollipop Yum Yum Yum from Dance Mod), Muffin Drive from Bluey: Rug Island and the recently released Burger Dog from the Bluey Minisode.
