If it is the same arc we are thinking of, Simone McCauley (Susie Raynor) would have left after falling victim to the latest serial attacks.

It became dark and in the few years it had left it lost its mojo and the fact that pj and tom yet again two loved ones was just bad writing. It should have probably ended around the time Jane Allsop.
Even The Bill had suffered the same fate ratings and the darker storylines didn’t work. Watching earlier episodes of The Bill and Blue Heelers you can see why it worked the storylines were good not over the top and casting was great .

Loved falcon price , not sure how much you have seen but Ben’s affair with Falcon Price’s wife certainly added a bit of drama .
Then there was the episode where Falcon Prixe and Jo were driving in the cop car and she crashed it into the river 
Around the time they blew up the police station and killed Joe and Grace and Clancey.
It was the Baxter family storyline which went on for far too long .
