Best and Worst Radio Station Logos

What date did C91.3 launch in 2001? I seem to recall it being on air in July of that year, though that could have been the test transmission only…

15th August.

Happy 20th birthday for Sunday, C91.3

I’d have to agree. C91.3 is the worst and their copy of the i98 logo is actually worse than the previous one.

I still can’t work out why they’d change their “new” logo to be one that is decades old (and a copy of an Auckland station logo).

Probably a corporate directive from WIN? We all know they’ve made some odd branding decisions at times particularly with their TV network…

The good.

The bad.

And the ugly

Radio Avon also famously had a positioning statement of ‘top banana’ and a logo shaped accordingly. The station also put in a bid to convert to FM and came up with a logo for ‘Music 90FM’, bland name, bland logo. Sadly for them they missed out and ZM and Canterbury FM got the licences instead.

Somehow that reminds me, C93FM in Dunedin used to be 93ROX… I was there in 1993 and they played some great music, it also struck me how similar their logo was in some ways to ROX FM Port Macquarie (which didn’t go to air until 1994).

That’s so cool.

1993! Really good time in Aotearoa radio, post-deregulation, but pre-duopoly. You would have had a ball in Dunedin at that time, with the scarfies. I hope you got to see some rugby at Carisbrook, the house of pain, and burn some couches. Yeah 93Rox… can certainly see the similarities there with ROX FM.

Any other similar logos? Rip-offs?

I was also in Dunedin in 1993, first ever time out of Australia and also my first snowfall. The only radio related memory I have is tuning into Radio Dunedin and hearing the 60s song ‘Barefootin’. In my defence I was only seven at the time; didn’t really get into radio until the following year.

Interesting you mention them - seeing as today is the day they officially died.

Oh? Time to put my jandals on and go for a tramp over to the NZ thread. But not before I take a refreshment from the chilly bin, choice!

The best and worst.

The best for coming up with a slick logo. The worst for copying.

(But maybe they both copied).

89.4 Auckland was known as 1MMM for a while, complete with the Dr Dan logo. Were there any ties to Muirs Money Machine on the West Island? I’m not certain of the timeframe, probably late 80s?

Yes. I had a ‘Homegrown’ poster from that time on the back of my door, and there was a TV ad they did which got banned because of strobing effects… oh the memories!

Keith Williams came over - and sounded so good! From 1986: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHkalT57VFA

What about i98FM Wollongong copying i98FM in NZ?

Yes! Gotta have a good eye for it.

Fun fact, pretty sure Radio i was the only radio station in Aotearoa to do the AM stereo thing.

Speaking of copying…
