Why does the first one like it was from yesterday

TVQ’s set was so dope - the slickest-looking in the country to my eyes. I loved the Ten Evening News style and that bold drumming.
I can remember how amazed I was to see the words “Dan Rather” so big and prominent on screen when I first saw the CBS Evening News.
Wow, 10 TV Australia were really in deep shit in 1990.
Meanwhile in Regional Australia, both Captial Eyewitness News and QTV Eyewitness News also used the CBS Evening news-style branding from 1990-1994.
Seven’s coverage of the Gulf War used various NBC News themes for their intro.
Sunrise using the Meet The Press/Special Report intro
By the way, even as a total Ten guy, I don’t think this core news imaging has ever been bettered.
I was always fascinated by the Australian Television Network idea because I always saw it on the movie promo, and endstraps for shows and current affairs, but it never got turned into a full station identity.
Even the recent Federal Election coverage was borrowed from NBC branded “Decision Night in Australia”
Pearl and Dean’s Asteroid theme as created by Peter Moore. Later used by ATV-0 for their 1973-74 “Action Station” campaign.
This is where the “Cool Hand Luke” theme, used by Nine and various other stations around the world, comes from:
And here’s the theme in action on the station that made it famous – WABC in New York:
TVW7 We’re With You promo, 1983:
…with a theme originally heard on WNAC in Boston:
Not Australia that’s doing the borrowing here, but rather New Zealand:
This news open from Channel 39 in Dunedin…
…used essentially the same graphics as ITV in the UK – the regional news on ITV Yorkshire in this case:
Wow, that’s the lowest energy iteration of the Action News theme I’ve seen. I know WPIX is far behind the O&Os in NYC, but, wow.
While WPVI is the most famous user of the theme, it actually got its start at WNAC (now WHDH) Boston in 1970. The music ended up in Philly when WNAC’s news director joined WPVI after a revamp of WNAC’s newscast.
I seem to recall a version made for ATV10 but I can’t find it online. Either way they don’t make news promos like that anymore. Hard hitting and effective.
