I can’t stand Q&A but it’s usually on because I live with someone who watches it every week. No matter what the “theme” for the week is you can guarantee SSM will get a good chunk of airtime on Q&A.
If Lateline has taken a different tact to discuss the topic then good for them, but we switched it off as soon as Emma Alberici said “special discussion on same sex marriage” in her intro, but I agree that surely there must be some broad editorial direction to say, come on, do two shows in a row have to cover this topic? Q&A’s questions are all pre vetted and so on, so it’s not like they can’t control what questions get asked by their audience.
Totally agree with your post and especially on this point - and really, it strikes at the heart of so many political debates recently - those on the left think they are better human beings, more respectful and decent overall. If I have to hear another public figure caution that those who don’t support same-sex marriage must ensure they are “respectful” in this debate I will go insane. So pathetically presumptuous to assume that favouring one side of a political issue means you are a nicer person.
I don’t think people simply “expressing their views” is what he is referring to.
I still think the survey will easily carry a Yes vote.
However, I can see the vision of blue-haired, pierced, rowdy loons shouting on city streets this weekend, for instance, and vision of Bill Shorten, once again, screaming about “equality” at another of his ranty rallies, being quite off-putting to many Australians (and crucially, traditional Labor voters). Seems to be already happening:
Jumping to conclusions a bit? There are other things going on, including as the Fairfax Media article suggested Shorten going hard against the LNP’s foreigners as ministers problem.
More importantly it’s not new that almost no one likes Shorten as leader, while they do like Turnbull but are disappointed by his gov’t, so it’s not shocking that Preferred PM remains against Shorten and preferred gov’t against the LNP.
Our sorters for country areas in places like Emerald and Blackwater as well as Rockhampton started sorting those last Friday Night and most may be out in homes now.
I’ve been trying to stay out of this for as long as possible because there’s been some ridiculous arguments from both sides of the debate. But if you really want to hear my opinion…
Although I question whether it’s really necessary to spend so much taxpayers money on what is little more than a very expensive opinion poll, I personally think Australia will eventually allow same sex marriage (or have marriage equality, whichever term works best) at some point in the future.
Exactly when the change of law will happen isn’t something I’m willing to make predictions about, but with Australian society’s acceptance of the LGBTIQ+ community having evolved quite considerably (and largely for the better) over recent decades, it’s inevitable IMO.
Inevitable yes, but don’t be surprised if this particular survey comes back with a No.
I think it will be a 45% - 55% margin that could go either way depending which side does a better job at convincing those in the middle.
The media is doing a good job at turning everyone off the whole idea with their bias to get it over the line. People don’t like being told what to think or believe.
Barcodes I can kind of understand coz people don’t know what they’re there for. But people seriously leaving their names and addresses visible in pics. Just as dumb as posting a pic of your new credit card, or bragging about a cheque given to you by your parents to buy a house (the latter I witnessed on FB firsthand).
