###Nova’s Kate, Tim & Marty win Best FM On Air Team

Kate Ritchie, Tim Blackwell and Marty Sheargold, hosts of the NOVA Network national drive show, have won the Best On Air Team (Metro FM), at the 28th annual Australian Commercial Radio Awards (ACRA) announced this evening at a gala black tie event at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Kate, Tim and Marty who started on air as a team in January 2014 are Australia’s number one drive team and last year took out the ACRA for Best Networked Program. When celebrating 15 years with Nova early this year, Tim credited the show’s success to the chemistry of the team and the fact they are complete opposites.

The Metropolitan Best On Air Team AM award went to 2GB’s Nights with Steve Price. Macquarie radio presenter and regular panellist on The Project, Steve has been in journalism for more than 30 years, and is joined every night on the program by opinion maker Andrew Bolt, as they review the news and current affairs. For the fifth year running, one of Australia’s most experienced journalists; 3AW’s Neil Mitchell has taken out the Best Current Affairs Presenter award. Best Talk Presenter was taken out for the third year by 2GB’s Ben Fordham and the show’s producer, Harriet Glenn won Best Talk/Current Affairs Producer.

Sam Pang (Nova 100 Melbourne) is this year’s winner of the Best Newcomer On Air gong. Sam is a member of the Nova Melbourne breakfast team with Chrissie Swan and Jonathan Brown and as a team they also won the Best Station Produced Comedy Segment . Hit Network’s Hamish and Andy (Hamish Blake and Andy Lee) won the ACRA for Best Networked Program. Smallzy (Kent Small) host of Smallzy’s Surgery on the Nova Network, took home the ACRA for Best Music or Entertainment Presenter. Jonesy & Amanda (Amanda Keller and Brendan Jones) WSFM101.7 Sydney breakfast duo, took out best Syndicated Program for their national weekly show My Generation.

Melissa Doyle and Richard Wilkins presenters on the night, picked up the Best Musical Special award on behalf of the entire smoothfm team for the Top 500 Smooth Favourites Countdown (smoothfm, NOVA Entertainment).

Winners in other major awards announced were:
• Best News Presenter FM – Ange Anderson (Nova 106.9 Brisbane)
• Best News Presenter AM – Anne Stone (FIVEaa, Adelaide NOVA Entertainment)
• Best Sports Presenter – Tim Lane (3AW, Macquarie Radio Network)
• Best DAB+ Digital Radio Format – Kinderling Kids Radio – Evan Kaldor (SCA)

Lisa Barnes from 6PR, Perth (Macquarie Media Limited) won the Brian White Memorial award which recognises sustained achievement and effort across news, current affairs, entertainment and sports reporting. The award includes a fellowship exchange with Mediacorp, Singapore’s largest broadcaster.

Cathy O’Connor, chief executive officer of Nova Entertainment who this year celebrates 31 years in the radio industry was inducted into the Commercial Radio Hall of Fame for her outstanding achievement and contribution to the radio broadcasting industry. One of Australia’s sole female chief executives of a stand-alone major media company, Cathy heads Nova Entertainment which is wholly owned by IIyria Nominees Television, a private investment company of Lachlan Murdoch. Full details here.

Chief executive officer of Commercial Radio Australia, Joan Warner said: “Congratulations to all this year’s winners. Each year, recipients of these awards continue to excel and consistently deliver on providing outstanding radio for millions of listeners throughout the country.”

Entries were received from 260 metropolitan and regional radio stations across Australia. Stations outside the metropolitan areas are well represented at the ACRAs with more than 200 finalists from country and provincial stations.

Organised by Commercial Radio Australia, the national Awards cover 33 categories. Winners are announced in each category across three areas: metropolitan, provincial and country commercial radio stations, and encompass all areas of commercial radio broadcasting including news, talk, sport, music and entertainment. The ACRAs differ from television’s Logie Awards in that they are peer judged by industry members.

Nova Entertainment CEO Cathy O’Connor inducted into Radio Hall of Fame

Cathy O’Connor, chief executive officer of NOVA Entertainment who this year celebrates 31 years in the radio industry was tonight inducted into the Commercial Radio Hall of Fame at the 2016 Australian Commercial Radio Awards (ACRAs).

Ms O’Connor was honoured with the accolade at a gala ceremony attended by 1200 of her industry peers at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. The award recognises outstanding lifetime achievement and contribution to the radio broadcasting industry.

One of Australia’s sole female chief executives of a stand-alone major media company, Cathy has lead NOVA Entertainment, the innovative media organisation which is wholly owned by IIyria Nominees Television, a private investment company of Lachlan Murdoch for last eight years.

Entering the radio industry in 1985, she started in sales roles at both 2SM and 2GB in Sydney. Her management career began at Austereo in 1991 where she held the roles of Agency Sales Manager, General Sales Manager and General Manager. Cathy joined dmg Radio Australia (now NOVA Entertainment), as Managing Director in January 2003, eventually taking over after the retirement of her mentor and giant of the radio industry Paul Thompson. She was appointed to the position of CEO in October 2008.

Since joining NOVA Entertainment, Cathy has been involved in the completion and evolution of the national network, including the launches of Nova Adelaide and Brisbane, and most recently the establishment of the successful contemporary easy listening FM smoothfm network. NOVA Entertainment owns and operates the national Nova radio network, including the smoothfm stations in Sydney and Melbourne, leading talk station FIVEaa in Adelaide, Star 104.5 on the Central Coast of NSW, and the three digital radio stations smoothfm, Coles Radio and Koffee.

In a recent article, Cathy was asked about her industry heroes and said: “Lachlan Murdoch is an amazing leader and has taught me to think big. Paul Thompson for creating a great radio company in the late 80’s – Austereo – and then doing it again in the 2000’s by building a profoundly different company, but equally successful, in the same radio sector – dmg Radio, now Nova Entertainment.”

A testament to Cathy’s leadership, NOVA was on the BRW Top 25 of the Best Places to work. Career achievements include the Telstra NSW Business Women’s Award for the Private Sector - over 100 Employees Category (1996), and Cathy was also awarded a Centenary Medal for Service to Australian Society in Business Leadership in 2003, recognising her significant career achievements.

Cathy has served on the Board of Commercial Radio Australia since 2006, and held the role of Chair from 2009 to 2012. Cathy is also a Governor of the Board of the Cerebral Palsy Foundation.

Commercial Radio Australia chief executive officer, Joan Warner said: “It has been a pleasure working with Cathy both when she was Chair of CRA and ongoing as an active and supportive Board member. It is a well deserved tribute to someone who has worked untiringly in the radio industry and we all hope will continue for many years to come.”

The Hall of Fame recipients are nominated by industry peers and are selected by an executive level judging committee. Last year’s inductee was Jeremy Cordeaux, previous inductees have included: Peter Harvie, Kevin Blyton, Graham Mott, Tony Pilkington, Derryn Hinch, Neil Mitchell, John Laws, Bob Rogers, Janet Cameron, Gary O’Callaghan, Paul Thompson, Bob Francis, Rod Muir and the late Frank Hyde.

What did they actually do? Each year, I read of the engineering award but there’s never many details.

“Embedded devices” sounds like something to do with automation? Is it?

Kyle and Jackie O lose crown; Bolt, Price win at 2016 Commercial Radio Awards
Conservative broadcasters Steve Price and Andrew Bolt were named best metro AM team for 2GB’s Nights with Steve Price.

It wasn’t such a great night for Kiis FM duo Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O, who lost the title of best metro FM team. Sydney’s top-rating FM breakfast hosts – who have won the prize five times – were usurped by Nova’s national drive program, Kate, Tim & Marty.

SMH

Very pleased to read that Amanda Keller has been inducted into the Hall of Fame. Amazing that she is only the first woman (EDIT: clarification… first woman presenter) to be inducted… surely there have been women deemed worthy for inclusion up until now? And the Logies copped criticism for only having 1 female inductee up until 2016

Congratulations to Amanda for being inducted into the hall of fame.
Ray Hadley was another inductee at tonight’s awards. He also won three awards tonight, making it 30 wins in his career. He won best talk presenter while the 2GB Continuous Call team won best on air team and best sports coverage.
Other major winners include: Nova’s Kate, Tim and Marty was named best FM on air team while Kyle and Jackie O won best networked program. The NRL Footy Show co-host Erin Molan was named best newcomer for her work on Continuous Call coverage.

HALL OF FAME

Ray Hadley
Amanda Keller

Great news that Amanda Keller is the first female inducted in the Hall of Fame

first female presenter as I later found out. Some female execs have already been added to the HOF.

Interesting that this year they’ve decided to add a male and female together to the hall of fame, in previous years it was just one or the other. Maybe this is something the Logies could learn from.

I see. Still quite an accomplishment.

Always anomalies in these awards that shows it’s not objective.

SCA Gold Coast despite underperforming for at least the last three years gets a range of gongs, best MD, best PD, best promotion and so on despite not being the leading station.

The GC hub also picked up a prize for a country market doco that aired supposedly only in country markets but produced by a provincial team of staff.

Hadley, the leading workplace bully has his actions condoned by association being given awards and hall of fame entry.

Mandy Keller is the first female announcer in the hall of fame, gee, that decade or so of Wendy actually at #1 FM on 2DAY was ignored wasn’t it?

K Rock wins the provincial sport category again, Blanda wins again. Bit monotonous, limit it to three or five years, we get it, they’re either great (Blanda) or they don’t have much competition (K-Rock, who does sport in Provincial).

Plenty more examples, some that many of you who read but never post would know all too well.

On a bright note, Stephen Cena… at 2NM, another award, well earnt, propping the station up indeed. Here’s a bloke who gets talkback radio but no openings in metro radio for him unfortunately.

Nominations for this year’s awards were announced this morning. The 2018 ACRAs will be held at October 20 in Melbourne.

Finalists released for Sunday 26 August:

The typical ‘head-scratchers’ and mismatches.

An award process that lurches between merit based and a mates club.

Love to read your thoughts. My analysis later.
