Australia Day

Surveys suggest Australians do though. You clearly have some very likeminded friends.

I’m genuinely curious, any particular reason? Even when I was younger a little more conservatives in thought than I am now I felt a republic was a no brainer even though as the years passed momentum for change lost pace.

Maybe consider broadening your horizons outside of your immediate echo chamber.

They did in the leadup to the referendum too - but the referendum sunk because of the model.

There are a lot of people who support a monarch, but only while the current one is in place

Yep, I wouldn’t underestimate the level of personal loyalty many people feel towards the current Queen. For anyone under the age of 70, she’s literally been the only monarch they’ve known.

When the time comes though that she is no longer around, I would imagine that the monarchy would lose a significant portion of it’s supporter base here (especially with some of Charles views, particularly on topics such as the environment, not exactly endearing himself to the more conservative base where the monarchy derives a lot of its support).

While this could be poking a hornet’s nest. The Greens are not “far-left”. They are a clearly defined “Left Wing” political party that expands to the Centre ranging from Democratic Socialists to Centrist Social Liberals (and I’m a member of a traditionally centre-right party, so i’m not an apologist for The Greens).

I support the monarchy and future King William will do a great job too so once the Queen does pass away, King Charles (if he chooses to reign) won’t be around for long before we get King William leading.

what job exactly?

As the head of the monarchy. Just as the queen has done for 70 years

I think he is asking what does the head of the monarchy do?

An absolute relic of a previous age.
Consign it to the dustbin of history like any grown up country should.

I refer back to my initial question

While we have a system where our head of state is basically a ceremonial role, I don’t particularly care (there are greater issues that we should be tackling). I wouldn’t be against having a more ‘active’ head of state and moving to a republic though.

 Why wouldn’t he choose to reign? He’s only been waiting 73 years to do so. You can’t pick and choose your favourite to rule. That’s not how it works.

Prince Charles can choose not to become king (not likely as you say) at which point the throne is then passed onto the next in line (Prince William). It has happened before.

That’s if the Monarchy is still around in the next 70 years.

I hope the day off in-lieu becomes mainstream. Even if you don’t care about the politics, the mid week public holiday is such a waste.

Also good friday, unless you are a devout christian, the day means nothing. Work on a day that everything is closed, then take another day off.

I bet they won’t cop the same backlash as the Ten Network did recently.
